SMITH, manufacturer, Ashland, was born in Worchester Co., Mass., Jan. 23, 1835; came westward in 1856, and settled at St. Cloud, Minn., where he went into mercantile business, in which he was engaged until 1873. He then moved to Ashland, Wis., and began the manufacture of boots and shoes. In 1879 he was elected Town Treasurer, and still holds that office. He married, in 1858, Miss Mary E. Mattoon. They have one son, Benjamin S. Mr. Smith belongs to the Masonic fraternity.
