First Generation
1. Joseph LAPOINTE Sr., M1,2,3,4,5. Born ca 1805
in Canada.6,7,8 Joseph died aft 1880; he was 75.9,5
Occupation:
Laborer.
Joseph La Pointe was born in Canada about 1805. He
emigrated to northern Wisconsin between 1830 and 1840 and married an
Indian woman, Margarette. They had at least five children.
He can
not be located on the 1830 US census.
In 1840 he lived in St.
Croix County, Wisconsin Territory which included all of northern
Wisconsin, including the village of La Pointe. He and his wife were
30-40 years of age and they had one daughter under 5 years of age and
two daughters 5-10 years of age, all born in Wisconsin. 10
From
1850 to 1860 he and his family lived on Madeline Island at the village
of LaPointe. He is a laborer with real estate valued at $1000. 11,12
In 1870 his son Henry had married, and both the Joseph La Pointe and
Henry La Pointe families lived on the adjacent mainland at Bayfield,
Bayfield, County, Wisconsin.13
In 1880 Joseph, 94, lives with the
family of his son Henry, in Bayfield. Margaret is no longer with them.5
By the 1900 census a large number of LaPointes live in Ashland,
Wisconsin or on the Bad River Indian Reservation near Ashland.

(Margarette), wife of Joseph died aft 1880; she was 68.9
In 1880
she is separated from Joseph, Sr., who lives with his son Henry and
family in Bayfield, Wisconsin. She is Margarett, age 75, Indian, and
keeps house for their daughter, Margarett, age 32, Indian, who lives at
home in Bayfield. 20

Joseph disappears from
the family in the 1870 census, but in 1880 lives in Bayfield with his
wife and 7 children. He is a 39 year old Indian male laborer. 5
Joseph married Harriet, wife of Joseph LAPOINTE Jr.5, F. Born ca 1841 in
Wisconsin, USA.27
In 1880 she is keeping house for her husband and
seven children.5

In 1870 he and Mary were married, with no
children, and lived in Bayfield, Wisconsin. 13 On 4 June 1880 Henry, a
37 year old laborer, his wife Mary, 30, and children Madaline, 6,
William, 4, Henry, 1, and his father Joseph LaPointe, 94, lived in the
village of Bayfield, Wisconsin.5
In 1860-1870 when Francois
(Henry) was 17, he married Mary, wife of Henry LAPOINTE13,5, F in
Wisconsin, USA.9 Born ca 1848 in Wisconsin, USA.13,31
They had
