First Generation

1. John J. SPENCER, M1,2,3. Born ca 1824-7 in England.4,1,5 John J. died in New Jersey, USA, bef 1900; he was 76.6

They immigrated from England in 1849 after the birth of their first child, John P.7 He may have come first as the only John Spencer in the New York area in 1850 that fits boards with the family of William A. Recker in Ward 17 of New York City. This John Spencer was a 27 year old tailor from England. 8 Thomas was born in 1853 in New Jersey. In 1860 he was a 33 year old artist from England who lived in North Bergen, New Jersey with his wife Ann, 21, their 6 oldest children and with Ann Threley, 60 and Elizabeth Threley, 24, both born in England.3,2 In 1870 he was a 46 year old grainer and marbler who lived in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey with his wife Ann, age 45 and their seven children. Ann Threley, age 70, still lived with them. Elizabeth Threley no longer lived with them. He had real estate valued at $4000 and a personal estate of $150. 2In 1880 he was a 56 year old painter who still lived in Union, New Jersey with his wife, Ann, age 55, and their four youngest children. Ann Threley no longer
lived with them.1In 1900 his widow Ann, age 74, lived with her daughter, Elizabeths family at 557 Jefferson Place, Union, New Jersey.7

John J. married Ann E., wife of John J. SPENCER1,2, F, daughter of Ann THRELEY, F (1800-bef 1880).
Born ca 1825 in England.4,1,2

In 1860 she was 21? and lived with her husband and six children in North Bergen, New Jersey. Living with them were Ann Theeley, 60 and Elizabeth Theeley, age 24, both born in England.3In 1870 she was 45 and lived with her husband and seven children in Union, New Jersey. 2In 1880 she was 55 and still lived with her husband and four youngest children in Union, New Jersey.1 In 1900, Ann, a widow age 74, lives with her daughter, Elizabeths family at 557 Jefferson Place, Union, New Jersey.7

They had the following children:

i. John P.2,3, M. Born in 1849-50 in England.2
In 1860 he was 10 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey. 3In 1870 he was 21, an engraver and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.2

ii. Thomas2,3, M. Born in 1853-4 in New Jersey, USA.2,3
In 1860 he was 6 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey. 3In 1870 he was 17 and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey. 2

iii. Tedius9,10, M. Born in 1856 in New Jersey, USA.2
In 1860 he was called Thesius, was 4 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey. In 1860 he was 10 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey. In 1870 he was called Tedius, was 14 and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.2

In 1870 he was 5 and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.2

Second Generation

2. James W. SPENCER, M1,13,3. Born in Feb 1858-9 in New Jersey, USA.14,15,16

In 1860 he was 2 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey. 3In 1870 he was 12 and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey. 2On 5 June 1900 he was 41 and had been married to Ella for 17 years. He was a painter and lived with his wife Ella, and four daughters Florence, Theresa, Margretta and Clara. They lived on Hackensack Plank Road in North Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey next door to his brother Charles and his family.13

In 1883 when James W. was 24, he married Ella, wife of James SPENCER13, F, daughter of Father of Ella SPENCER, M & Mother of Ella SPENCER, F.6 Born in Apr 1860 in New Jersey, USA.13 In 1900 she had been married 17 years and had had five children, with four alive.13

They had the following children:

i. Florence13, F. Born in Feb 1884 in New Jersey, USA.13
In 1900 she was age 16, living with her family and attending school.13

ii. Theresa13, F. Born in Aug 1885 in New Jersey, USA.13
In 1900 she was age 14, living with her family and attending school.13

iii. Margaretta13, F. Born in 1888 in New Jersey, USA.13
In 1900 she was age 12, living with her family and attending school.13

iv. Clara13, F. Born in Feb 1892 in New Jersey, USA.13
In 1900 she was age 8, living with her family and attending school.13

3. Charles SPENCER, M17,18,19,4,20,1,2,3. Born in Jan 1860 in New Jersey, USA.21,22,4,2,23 Charles died aft 1930; he was 69.20

In 1860 he was 4 months old and lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey.3 In 1870 he was 10 and lived with his parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.2In 1880 Charles was single, a bookkeeper and lived with his parents and three siblings in Union, New Jersey. 1In 1900 he was a painter living with his wife and three children on Hackensack Plank Road in North Bergen, New Jersey.13 In 1910 he lived in North Bergen, New Jersey with his wife and four children. 4In 1920 Charles Spencer was a contract builder and lived in a home he owned at 939 Hackensack Plank Road, North Bergen, New Jersey with his wife Clara, his daughter Harriet, his mother in law August A. Snay(?) and his sister in law, Emma Snay(?). William and John no longer lived with the family.24 In 1930 he was a retired widower and lived with his daughter Harriet in a rented home on 44th Street in Union City, New Jersey. Clara had died after 25 years of marriage. 20

ca 1881-2 when Charles was 20, he married Clara, wife of Charles SPENCER4,24, F, daughter of Father Emma ?, M (-bef 1920) & August? A., mother of Emma ?, F (ca 1842-), in New Jersey, USA.6 Born ca 1863 in New Jersey, USA.4,24 Clara, wife of Charles died bef 1930; she was 67.20
She had died by 1930, after 25 years of marriage. 20

They had the following children:

iii. Harriet C.4, F. Born ca 1894 in New Jersey, USA.4,24 Harriet C. died aft 1930; she was 36.20 Occupation: Stenographer.24
She was 17 and living with her parents in North Bergen, New Jersey in 1910. 4She was 25, single, working as a stenographer in a law office and living with her parents in North Bergen, New Jersey on 1 January 1920. She was still single, 36, and working as a stenographer in a law office while living with her widowed father in 1930.24

4. Elizabeth SPENCER, F1,2. Born in Aug 1863 in New Jersey, USA.25,26,27

In 1870 she was 9 and lived with her parents in Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.2

ca 1886 when Elizabeth was 22, she married Henry SCHWEISGUTH7, M, son of Father of Henry SCHWEISGUTH, M & Mother of Henry SCHWEISGUTH, F.7 Born in Feb 1863 in New York, USA.7

In 1900 he was a 37 year old printer who lived with his wife, Elizabeth, 36, children Mary, 11, Harry, 6, and his mother in law, Ann Spencer, 74 at 557 Jefferson Place, Union, Hudson County, New Jersey.7

They had the following children:

ii. Harry7, M. Born in Nov 1893 in New Jersey, USA.7 

Third Generation

5. John Arthur SPENCER Sr., M21,28,17,18,19,13. Born on 12 Mar 1883 in New York City, New York County, New York, USA.21,28,17,18,4 John Arthur died in Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, USA, on 29 Apr 1951; he was 68.17 Buried on 2 May 1951 in Long Prairie, Todd County, Minnesota, USA.18 Occupation: Manager- Underwriters Adjustment Company, Duluth, Minnesota.17,18 Cause of death: Coronary Thrombosis.17

He lived with his parents and siblings in North Bergen, New Jersey in 1900.13and 1910. In 1910 he was an accountant for a steam railroad. 4 He fished on Staten Island, New York. 19

He moved to Minnesota in 1911, becoming associated with the Minnesota & Ontario Paper Company in International Falls.18 In 1918 he was the Insurance Manager for the company.29

On 1 January 1920 they lived in a home they owned at 603 6th Street, International Falls, Minnesota with his wife Olive. They had no children. He worked as a clerk in a paper mill and she was unemployed. He stated both his father and mother were born in the U.S.28

In 1922 they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he became a member of the staff of the Underwriters Adjustment Company. His territory included Long Prairie. 18

On 1 April 1930 they lived in a house they rented at 4330 Pleasant Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was 47 years old, married, with three children and was a fire insurance adjustor. He stated that his father was born in New York and his mother was born in England.21

In 1942 they moved to live at 2610 Jefferson Street, Duluth, Minnesota17 where he became manager of the companys Duluth branch. He lived in Duluth until the time of his death. He was a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce and The Honorable Order of the Blue Goose, International, a fraternal organization of men and women who work in the property and casualty insurance industry .18

On 20 Aug 1918 when John Arthur was 35, he married Olive STEPHENSON30,31,32,33, F in Long Prairie, Todd County, Minnesota, USA. Born ca 1893 in Minnesota, USA.21,28 Olive died aft 29 Apr 1951; she was 58.17,18

Occupation: School Teacher.
She was raised in Long Prairie, Minnesota. 18Her father and mother were both born in Minnesota. 28

They had the following children:

i. Dorothy21,18, F. Born ca 1921 in Minnesota, USA.21 Dorothy died aft 29 Apr 1951; she
was 30.18
She was living in Waukegan, Illinois at the time of her fathers death.18

He was serving with the First Marine Division in Korea at the time of his fathers death.18

6. William H. SPENCER Esq., M19,4,34,35. Born ca 1886 in New Jersey, USA.4,35,34,13 William H. died aft 1930; he was 44.6

In 1900 he was 15 years old, living with his family and had a milk route. 13In 1910 he was a 24 year old lawyer with his own practice, who was single and lived with his father and mother and John and Harriet in North Bergen, New Jersey. 4In 1920 he was a 34 year old attorney who lived in a home he owned at 775-30th in the First Ward of New Bergen Township, Hudson County, New Jersey. His wife Mary, 29, son William Jr., 7, and daughter Marjorie, 2, lived with him.35 In 1930 he was a 44 year old lawyer in the banking industry who lived with his family in a home he owned worth $11,000 at 116 Spring Valley? Avenue near the corner of Catalpa Avenue In Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. 24He fished on Staten Island, New York.19

ca 1910 when William H. was 24, he married Mary E., wife of William H. SPENCER34,35, F.34 Born ca 1891 in New York, USA.34 Mary E., wife of William H. died aft 1930; she was 39.6

In 1930 she was 39 and lived with her husband, William, 44, and their children Marjorie B, 12, William H., Jr., 17, and Betty J., 3 years and 4 months of age.34

They had the following children:
