LARS JENSEN OBITUARY

Reprinted from the "Iron River Pioneer" October 12, 1961 Iron River Memories column by Beverlee Thivierge

The body of Mr. Lars Jensen, Iron River, was found shortly after noon Sunday after a grueling search that started Saturday evening. Mr. Jensen had been staying at the home of his son, Alvin, in Oulu, while recuperating from injuries sustained in a fall. The Alvin Jensens had gone to attend their son's wedding some 400 miles away, and Mrs. Jensen's daughter, Thelma Terlson, was at their farm to keep her father company. At 4:30 p.m. Mr. Jensen decided to take a little walk. When he did not return before dark, Mrs. Terlson became alarmed as she could not find him or the family dog. Between 50 or 60 people searched until midnight. The search began again on Sunday morning with scores of folks from the surrounding townships pitching in to help. The Ashland Civil Air Patrol also helped. They located Mr. Jensen's body about a mile from the home in the Muskeg, with the family pet standing guard. Mr. Jensen died of a heart attack the previous evening, as determined by the County Coroner. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Jensen were reached and arrived from Platteville.

Mr. Jensen was born Nov. 16, 1887, in Porsgrunn, Norway, and came to America in 1909, and to Iron River in 1919. He married Miss Olga Olson Oct. 19, 1910. JOANIS OBITUARY

Albert Joanis, 87, and a native son of Washburn, died on Monday, March 4, 1985, at the Anaheim Memorial Hospital, Anaheim, California. He was born January 18, 1898, to Alfred and Louise Cayo Joanis, one of Washburn's pioneer families. Albert came from a family of fifteen, he being the ninth child born.

Mr. Joanis grew up in Washburn, attended early schooling, and was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, both in Washburn, and in California. He married the former Norma K. Peterson, from another pioneer family of Washburn. They were married on March 12, 1918. Albert and Norma just missed celebrating 67 years of marriage by one week. They are the parents of two children; a daughter, Kathlyn V. Gilderseeve of La Habra, California, and a son, Donald W. Joanis, who preceded him in death in 1968.

He worked for E.I. DuPont at the Barksdale Plant for 44 years, being in the Transportation Dept., and retired from DuPont in 1964. After several years retirement, they decided to come to California to be near their only daughter, Kathlyn. All their immediate family, five generations, are living in the La Habra and Fullerton area. Mr. Joanis spent many happy years in California, as he was a great family man. He could never do enough for his family. He was rich in family love, and enjoyed the friendship of many good friends.

He is survived by his wife, Norma K. Joanis; his daugher Kathlyn Gildersleeve, and her husband Jack; a grandson Gary Gildersleeve all of La Habra; a granddaughter, Linda K. Bray; four great grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren, all of Fullerton, California. He is also survived by two brothers and one sister - Edmond of Kenosha and Emil and Loretta (Mrs. Harold Anderson) of Washburn, and many nieces and nephews.

Rosary services were held Thursday, March 7th at the Coleman Mortuary, and the Church services were held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Friday, March 8th, 1:00 p.m. The Mass was said by Father Roughan. During the service tributes were given by his family - read by granddaughter, Lynda Bray. The pallbearers were the sons-in-laws, grandchild, and four great-grandchildren of Albert's. There were many floral tributes given and many Memorial Gifts given to the St. Louis Catholic Church Building Fund in Washburn in Albert's name.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended were Joyce and Larry Herzog, from San Clemente, CA; Alex and Marie Fraser from Hemet, CA; Helen Hansen from Lynwood, CA; Frances and Len LeBlanc from Long Beach, CA; and Robert Arseneau from Van Nuys, Calif. One of the floral tributes was from all the people who attend the Washburn Picnic each year. Albert and Norma always looked forward to this event each year, when old friendships were renewed. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.

Iron River Pioneer March 14, 1985

NOTE:
The granddaughter's name is spelled Linda in the 4th paragraph and Lynda in the 5th paragraph. The mention of the pallbearers as sons-in laws cannot be strictly correct, as there was only one daughter. The last sentence actually read "Albert and Norman always looked forward to this event..." It is assumed that the reference is to his wife, Norma. Another reminder that obituaries are helpful, but may contain inaccuracies.

MARY BEACH JOHNSON OBITUARY

On Tuesday evening, February 3rd, at half past six o'clock, Mary Beach Johnson, aged twenty one years, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Fred G. Johnson, passed from this life to the Spirit Land. Her leave taking, though peaceful and serene, and not unexpected, nevertheless tore the heart-strings of her loving parents and other realtives, and brought deep grief to a wide circle of friends.

Mary was born at Lake Nebagamon, Wis., on January 11, 1904, and when four years of age came with her parents to live in Iron River. She lived the normal wholesome life of a village girl who loved the great outdoors and who put the best that was in her into every undertaking, whether that undertaking was work or play. She graduated from the Iron River high school in June, 1921, with high scholastic standings, and she brought honor to her school by winning first place in the Chequamegon League declamatory contest with her delcalmation, "Smile, Smile, Smile," and representing the League in the final state contest at Wisconsin's capitol in the spring of 1920.

In the fall of 1921, she entered the state normal school at Superior, but after a short period there her health began to show impairment, and she found it necessary to give up her school work and to take treatment and a complete rest. Her ailment - pulmonary tuberculosis - responded to the treatment, and a year later she reentered Superior Normal hopeful of realizing her ambition to qualify herself for the teaching profession. After two years her former trouble recurred, and this time treatment proved unavailing. She was up and about until 10 days before her death, and though she fully realized that death was near at hand, she pursued the tenor of her way undisturbed and unafraid.

Talented, happy, a lover of the home as well as the great outdoors, she was the life of the home and a cheery companion to her mother, yet ofttimes she accompanied her father on outing trips, and he found her a great pal, for the woods, the birds, the lakes and the running brooks unfolded to her a story more fascinating than any penned by man.

The funeral will take place tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Congregational Church, and the interment will be at the City Cemetery. Rev. Arthur G. Young, the pastor, will officiate.

Nathaniel S. Johnson OBITUARY
Sufferd Fatal Stroke
Last of Two Civil War Veterans Residing in Iron River to Die Within Few Months

Nathaniel S. Johnson, Civil War veteran, passed away last Monday morning, June 16, at St. Mary's Hospital in Superior, from the effects of a stroke which he suffered here on Wednesday afternnon previous. He was in his room at the Park Hotel in this city and when the stroke came on he fell and fractured a hip bone. It was quite apparent that the fall was due to a stroke, and his condition was such almost from the start that practically no hope was held out for his recovery. He passed away peacefully, and thus ended a long and useful life, for Nathaniel Johnson had seen much activity, as a soldier in the 40th Wisconsin Regiment, Co, D, enlisting at Oregon, Wis., under John C. Spooner, who later became famous as Wisconsin United States Senator and "Little Giant" in memorable debates, and in civilian life. He was born at Walton, N.Y., on Sept 4, 1847.

After the war, Nathaniel married Miss Nellie Amelia Beach, and to them five children were born - two daughters and three sons. The eldest daughter passed away at Lake Nebagamon in the year 1901, but the rest of the family, namely, Mrs. Georgia E. Kingsley, of Glendale, California, and Nathaniel B. Johnson, of Los Angeles, California; Dr. Fred G. Johnson of this city, and Dr. Ed. C Johnson, of Ashland, survive, also nine grand children and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mr. Johnson joined the Masonic Order in his old home town of Oregon, Wisconsin, March 26, 1870, over 71 years ago, and at the time of his death was probably the oldest member of that order in the state.

He was a commercial salesman practically all of his life, and for thirty years was secretary of the Duplex Manufacturing Company at South Superior. His wife passed away in this city in the year 1917, and since that time he has divided his time between Iron River and California, and up to a few years ago thought nothing of making the trip all by himself. About eight years ago when 86 years of age, he traveled extensively through the southland and visited many of the old battlefieds where he fought in the sixties, and also visited other points of interest, and made that entire trip without escort. Being accustomed to travel, he seemed to experience no difficulty in getting around the country.
