OLSON, OSCAR OBITUARY

Death Claims Oscar Olson

Oscar Olson, who made this city his home for many years, died at St. Joseph's hospital in Ashland last Saturday morning, [ May 31,1919] where he had been taken the week previous in a critical condition.

The deceased never became a citizen of the United States, though he had long been in the country. Of late years he made a living by "swamping" around the saloons and doing little odd jobs and chores. While not generally regarded as of much use to himself or mankind, Oscar nevertheless had some traits that were altogether good. He never put himself in anyone's way, was always kind to, and interested in, little children, and though he often had the opportunity to violate a trust, he was never known to do so. For a man who was the slave that he was to the drink habit, that is saying considerable.

Living the life that he did, Oscar's constitution was undermined, and he was but a living "horrible example" of the certain results of excessive drinking, yet he was able to get around and still do such chores as he had been accustomed to up to a few weeks ago. His sudden complete collapse was brought about, it is said, by an overdose of alcoholic drinks given to him by a local bartender as a "good joke." Intoxicated persons are often referred to as being "paralyzed.' In this case it was literally true, for when Oscar got sober and over the delirium tremens he was paralyzed and unable to move either of his legs. Mrs. Carl Herring, who has always been kind to every unfortunate person, took Oscar to her home, and nursed him through days and nights of his mental and physical torture, until his mind cleared up. He was then taken to the Ashland hospital, but grew worse until death ensued.
