Buffalo Co. Veterans Who Died
in the Service of their Country
During World War I
The war began as a local European conflict between Austria-Hungary and Serbia on July 28, 1914. It transformed into a general European war by the declaration of war made by Germany against Russia on August 1, 1914. It eventually became a global war involving 32 nations. Although President Wilson tried to keep the United States out of the war early on, Germany's intention to commence unrestricted submarine warfare brought on the United States declaration of war on Germany April 6, 1916. The first large draft lottery followed in 1917 and American troops began to train and deloy to France. June 4, 1918 marked the first American action in force when the American Second Division halted the German advance at Château-Thierry. At the 11th hour on November 11th, 1918, hostilities came to an end on the Western front and an Armistice was signed. Over 5 million Allied personnel were killed or died during service to their country, 126,000 from the United States.
