Otto Tischendorf 1867-1955

Funeral Services for Otto Tischendorf, 88, were held from St. Peters Lutheran Church here at 2:00p.m. yesterday, Aug 10. The Rev.F.H. Sprengler officiated at the rites and Miss Janis Lier sang Be Still My Soul and Jesus Pilot Me. Mrs. M.E.Vircks accompanied the soloist and played organ music for the service.

Burial was in Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. pall bearers were Loyal Crandall, Roy Crandall, Cadott; Frank Ellis and Lawrence Gohlinghorst, Tabor, Iowa; Keith Tischendorf, Colby; Albert Hoffman, Abbotsford.

Fuchsgruber Funeral Service had charge of arrangements and the deceased lay in state at the local funeral parlor prior to funeral rites.

Mr. Tischendorf died about 6a.m. Sunday, Aug.7, in Marathon County Hospital, Wausau, where he had been a patient for about a year. He suffered ill health for the past three or four years.
Born in Germany
Otto Tischendorf was born July 2, 1867 in Germany and came to this country about 65 years ago. He worked about this community for several years and about a half a century ago located on a farm in the Town of Holton which was his home until recently. He was married in Germany to Agnes Taylor who died in 1918. Several years later he remarried with her sister, Mrs. Emma Hoffman, who died in 1947. He and his son Frank continued to live on the farm now owned by the latter and operated by Donald Tischendorf, until a couple years ago when they moved to the place on the Dorchester Corner.

Survivors include three sons Edward, Fred, and Frank all of this community; five daughters Mrs. Harold (Ida) Goodwin, Lamita, California; Mrs. Delmar (Frieda) Bell, Underwood, Iowa; Mrs. Molly Dauer, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. James (Louise) Crandall, Cadott; twenty one grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A stepson Albert Hoffman, Abbotsford, also survives. And a son Carl died in service during World War I.
Descendant of Theologian
In years past, Mr. Tischendorf often recalled that his family was descended from the scholar, Lobegott Friedrich Constantin Tischendorf, who was professor of theology at the University of Leipzig for nearly thirty years prior to his death. The professor was born Jan. 18, 1815 at Lengenfeld, Voigtland, Saxony, Germany and early in life became interested in biblical manuscripts. he discovered the Codex Sianitcus at the St. Catherine Monastery at Mt. Sinai in May of 1844.

Recent reseach & correspondence has produced some additions & corrections to the original obituary of Otto Tischendorf printed in the Dorchester Clarion Thursday, Aug. 11, 1955 Vol. XVIII No. 40. Otto's first wife, Agnes' maiden name was Doehler rather than Taylor. The daughter who's name was omitted in the obit was Mrs. Frank C. (Marie Louise) Ellis of Tabor, Iowa.
