CHRISTOPH BACH - listed as member in 1869, 1870 and 1873; assigned 2 seats in pew 14 for both 1875 and 1876; contributed to the first building fund of 1861; contributed to the furniture and bell collections of 1870; in 1870 he also purchased a cemetery lot; served as clerk at the 1878 parish council election. [The 1869 list of original parishioners lists both Christoph and
Christopher Bach as parishioners, so there are 2 separate men here. After
the 1869 listing however, it becomes almost impossible to determine which
one contributed to which collection and pew rent.]
born in France on 15 Oct 1801, he married Margaret ....., born 14 Apr 1808 (cem). Their known children were all born in France. Dominique Bach family came on the same ship as my great-grandfather Theobald Kohn. The ship was the Hampden; it sailed from Havre to New York arriving on 2 July 1852. The passengers for the Bach family are: In the 1855 state census there are 8 males and 2 females in their household. By 1870 they appear to have established a very prosperous farm. They own 214 acres, 100 of which are in cultivation. They have 6 horses, 5 cows, 2 work ox, 4 young cattle, 35 sheep and 8 pigs, and have managed to harvest an abundant amount of farm produce. Their harvest for the year amounted to: 800 bu. Wheat, 100 bu. Indian corn, 500 bu. Oats, 40 bu. Barley; they also had 160 lb. Wool, 50 bu. Of Irish potatoes, 500 lb. Butter and 50 tons of hay. By 1870 he is listed in the agricultural census for the town of Ashford, owning 80 acres of land, 40 acres of which were improved and cleared for production. He had 2 horses, 2 cows, 10 sheep and 2 pigs. He harvested wheat, Indian corn and oats, as well as wool, butter, potatoes and orchard produce. He married Margaret ....., (born 1846 in France) and they were the parents of: John, born 1866

OWEN BANNON Farmer in section 7, Town of Auburn; born in County Louth, Ireland on 22 Oct. 1806, the son of Michael and Ann Bannon; came to America in 1834, and worked sixteen years as a laborer in Dutchess Co. NY. He married in 1849 Miss Rose Hoye of Ireland, who came to America in 1847. In May 1850 they came to Auburn and bought 160 acres of land; only 10 acres were cleared, and on that clearing was a floorless and doorless log home; holes were cut for doors and windows and blankets hung over the openings, giving slight protection against the bears that used to be neighborly, so much so as to occasionally "borrow" a pig of the Bannons. On one occasion Mr. Bannon and two other men discovered a bear about to seize one of his hogs. The night was dark and rainy. One of the men started for a house nearby to get a gun, and after he had been gone some time the other man went to see what had become of the first one, leaving Mr. Bannon alone to watch the bruin. The rain fell in torrents, but he continued to watch until at length he came to the conclusion that his comrades did not intend to return. He passed on one side of a log, the bear being on the other, and leaving the hog to its fate went to the house. Thoroughly drenched, he at length reached home where he found the two men sitting by the fire. In a short time he heard the cries of the hog and in the morning found some of the pieces. |

The 1850 Federal Census shows Owen Bannon as the owner of 12 improved and 148 unimproved acres; the value of his farm was listed as $800 while the value of farm implements was only $10. He owned 2 milch cows, 2 work ox, and 2 'other' cattle. He also had 10 swine, and the total value of his livestock was listed as $86. He as yet had no extra crops put aside, but had 60 lb. Of Irish Potatoes, a small amount of buckwheat, and 40 lb. Of butter. The Bannons over time expanded their holdings to 440 acres and built a brick farmhouse. Their son Michael Bannon was born Jan 28, 1850. He attended Milton College, and graduated from Notre Dam; his death on 10 Jan. 1880 was a severe blow to the family. Their second son James was born May 28, 1852 and attended Northwestern College at Evansville, Ill; he married Sept 10, 1878 Miss Bertha Husting, of New Cassel. The first Mass in the area was held in the Bannon home. Owen was one of the original trustees of St. Matthew's who signed a contract in 1861 for the construction of a church for the parishioners. He is included in the membership lists of 1869 thru 1877; he also donated to the bell, rectory, salary and furniture collections taken in 1870. Rose Hoey Bannon died on 22 Oct. 1889, at age 68. John Owen Bannon died 29 Oct. 1891. He is included in the membership lists of 1869 thru 1877; in 1875 he rented 2 seats in pew 1, and in 1876 rented 2 seats in pew 2; he also donated to the bell, rectory, salary and furniture collections taken in 1870, and to the baptismal font collection in 1877. He served as a trustee on the parish council in 1875.
JAMES BANNON born 28 May 1852 in Wis. To Owen and Rose Hoey Bannon, he spent his entire youth in New Cassel, attending school there. In 1871 he entered high school in Fond du Lac, and then taught school at New Cassel for five years. He later decided to continue his education, attending Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill for two years. He married on 10 Sept 1878 Miss Bertha Husting (born 1853), and assumed complete management of his father's farm in 1880. In 1927 they are residing in Mott. N.D. James and Bertha Bannon were the parents of: Arnold M. (Jacob A. in baptismal register), born 25 (20) Oct. 1879
and bapt 27 Oct. 1879;
In 1882 James was nominated clerk of the court, and has held the office of Supervisor, and chairman of the Town Board. He served as President of the New Cassel Branch, No. 57, Catholic Knights, of which he was a charter member. James died in 1938 and Bertha died in 1942.
NIC BRAUN/BROWN - born in 1818, he emigrated to the United States in 1844, settling first in Washington County, WI on a rented farm. He built a log cabin on that farm and during his residence there cleared the timber and underbrush from fifty acres of land, which he worked on shares for six years. He then purchased land in the Town of Eden. The land at the time he settled was heavily covered with hardwood timber, and the first improvements made on the farm were a log cabin and stable. In 1845 he married Magdeline Wilcomb (spelled in Church records as Willkomm), a native of Germany born in 1827, and they were the parents of thirteen children, nine of whom survived their parents: Hannah, born 1857 John, born 5 May 1858, died 25 Oct. 1863 of diphtheria and buried in St. John's Byron cemetery. Annie, married Adolph Bach Jan 7, 1879 Mary, born March 1850, died 2 Apr 1857 of scarlet fever, buried in Byron cemetery. Peter, born 1853, married Julia Herbert Feb 3, 1880 Nicholas, born 15 Apr 1854 and died 18 Apr 1857 of scarlet fever; buried in Byron cemetery. Mary, born 1860; married Martin Herbert Feb 3, 1880. Louisa, born 1862; married M. Christina Kierig (Anthony Kierig and Gertrude Koll) on Apr 21, 1885. Laura Ellen, born 1864 Katherine, born 23 July and bapt 15 Aug 1865; married Jacob H. Maney (David Maney and Ellen O'Brien) on Apr 21, 1885. Henry, born 1868 John, born 8 Aug and bapt 4 Sept 1870 William, born 1873 Magdelen, married August Stenz (John Stenz and Eva Stumpf) on Aug 21, 1885. Nic died on 3 March 1889 at age 71y 6m 17d, and his wife died in 1910. He contributed to the first building fund in 1861; listed in the 1869 thru 1877 membership lists; contributed to the 1870 fund drives for salary, rectory and furniture. Listed on the 1873 special assessment; rented 3 seats in pew 3 and 1 seat in pew 46 in 1875; rented 3 seats in pew 3 in 1876; contributed to the baptismal font collection in 1877.
JOHN CALHOUN - born 1825 or 1832 in Ireland; died 19 May 1897, age 65, married Catherine Coyle (born 1834 in Ireland); they were the parents of: Maria, born 1851; died Nov. 1873 age 20. John, born 1853 Sarah, born 1855 William, born 1857 or 1858; died 1946; married Ellen (1858-1941) James, born 1860 Catherine, born 1864 Ellen, born 1867 Joseph, born 21 Oct 1870 and bapt 4 Jan. 1871 Included in membership lists of 1869, 1872-76; listed for special assessment of 1873; rented 2 seats in pew 3 for 1875; rented 1 seat in pew 6 for 1876.
HARVEY CARTER - farmer, section 35, Town of Eden - born in Crawford Co. Penn. On 8 March 1817. He married in 1837 to Miss Sarah Cole, and in Oct. 1839 he drove an ox team to Milwaukee and at once made a squatters claim in that county. Here the young couple saw all they wished of frontier life, living on scant supply of milk and corn meal, the corn pounded fine in a log hollowed out for that purpose. Knowing that he must have an ox to clear his land for planting, he tramped to the village and applied to Hal ludington, then a hardware merchant, and afterward Governor of Wisconsin. He told Mr. Ludington that he was penniless, but that he would pay for the ox with the sale of his first crop, but Mr. Ludington refused. Harvey later found a friend and an ox, and Mr. Ludington lost a customer. On May 22, 1847 Harvey received a government patent on 40 acres in
section 2 of the Town of Ashford. In June 1847 the Carters settled on land
in the Town of Eden. They were the first settlers in the southern half
of the township. In 1851 his first wife died, leaving three children:
In the 1855 census there are 3 males and 6 females in the household, and in 1875 there are 3 males and 7 females. Harvey died 27 Oct 1898 at age 81, and his wife Margaret died 28 Dec 1900. THOMAS CURRAN (1841 - 14 May, 1922), married on 30 Jan 1872 to Catherine McCullough, (1854-18 June 1914) the daughter of Michael McCullough. By 1870 they are listed in the agricultural census with 80 acres of land, 60 of which has been cleared for production. They are the owners of 3 horses and 3 cows, 4 youngstock, and 30 sheep and 4 pigs. They harvested wheat, Indian corn and oats, as well as wool, potatoes, butter and hay. They were the parents of: Ella/Helen T. (6 Feb 1875, bapt 28 Feb 1875 - 13 Dec 1895, age 19) Anna, born 1 Apr and bapt. 5 May 1877. ANDREW DIERINGER farmer, section 7 Town of Auburn; born in Germany Nov 30, 1823, he spent his early life and was educated and learned blacksmithing in Germany. Came to America July 4, 1844 and spent about 10 years at blacksmithing and on the canals in Ohio; in 1854 he settled on a heavily timbered farm in Ashford, in section 30; the 1855 WI State Census lists 6 males and 2 females in the household. After seven years he bought the Griffith saw mill and 80 acres of land with it. In 1868 he settled on 240 acres of land in the Town of Auburn, building a 40 x 84 ft. basement barn. He first served two years as a supervisor of Ashford Township and was then Chairman for 10 years. In 1865 and again in 1869 he was chosen a member of the Wisconsin Legislature and has been twice Chairman of the Town of Auburn. He was the first President of the Ashford Insurance Company, and in 1875 he had charge of the material used in building an addition to the St. Francis Seminary, Milwaukee. In 1874 he was appointed by the court to be the guardian of 6 Hegner orphans, whose father had died in 1865 and whose mother died in 1872. He married, in Ohio, Miss Crescentia Strobel (born 18 Sept 1818) and they were the parents of eight children: Valentine, born 1847 in Ohio Frank X., born 1850 in Ohio Joseph, born 1851 in Ohio Anna Mary, born 1853 in Ohio; married Jacob Straub 2 Feb. 1874; died 15 Apr 1883 at age 30. Andrew, born 1855 in WI, married Margaret Mauel on Jan 28, 1878. Catherine, born 1858 in WI; married John Mauel on March 4, 1878 Philipp, born 1860 in WI Thomas J. 1861-1935; married Rosalia Mauch (1864-1958) and they had daughters Rosalia who died in Jan 1886 at age 1 yr and 7 mo., and Olive, both buried in St. Matthew's cemetery. Andrew died 5 Oct 1915, and his wife died 14 May 19901. Thomas Strobel, born 21 Dec. 1798 and died 9 Dec 1888 is buried in the same plot with Andrew and Crecintia, and is probably Crecintia's father.

BARNEY DOUGHERTY ----(?) Dougherty died Nov 18, 1875 at age 8, and a few days later Patrick Dougherty died on Nov 22, 1875 at age 22. Both are buried in St. Matthew's cemetery, in lot #27, that was purchased by Barney Dougherty in 1875. Patrick's tombstone also has the names of Owen and Joseph Dougherty, but no dates.

PATRICK DOYLE (15 Dec 1836 - 20 May 1909) married Mary Carroll (d. 18 March 1890) and they were the parents of: John, born 2 Oct and bapt 31 Oct 1869 Bernard, born 25 Jan and bapt 16 Feb 1873; died 4 Oct 1953 Ellen, 25 Mar 1875 - 21 Oct 1928 Jane 1867 - 1937 m. ___Walsh There is also a Jane Doyle buried in the cemetery, who died 12 Jan 1882 at age 81, who is likely his mother.
LUDWIG DUNN Church and cemetery records indicate that Brigitta Dunn, age 60, died July 1882; John Francis Dunn, 23, son of John and Catherine, died in 1885; John Dunn died in 1886. No other information.

GEO L HAESSLY born 22 May 1838 in Northumberland Co. PA, the son of Philip Haessly and Anna Maria Spohn. He was probably only a year old when his family moved to Dungannon, Columbiana Co. Ohio. There he married on 12 Feb 1863 Theresa Schirck, born 31 Oct 1842, the oldest of seven daughters of Jacob Schirck and Katherine Bagley. In the 1870 agricultural census George is listed as owning 80 acres of land, 40 of which had been cleared for production. He owned 2 horses and 3 cows, 2 work ox and had 5 head of youngstock. He also had 7 sheep and 5 pigs. His crops consisted of wheat, Indian corn and oats, but he must have just acquired his sheep, for he had no wool. He did have potatoes, butter and hay. JACOB HAESSLY born in Bucks Co. PA on March 2, 1824, the son of Philip and Anna Mary Haessly. His parents moved to Columbiana Co. Ohio in 1839. Jacob came to WI in 1847 and purchased land, but did not take up residence here until 1851, when he and his brother Jonathan settled upon the land that he had purchased earlier. On 31 Dec 1846 in Dungannon, Columbiana Co. Ohio he married Sarah Fitzpatrick, born in Ohio on June 9, 1826. In the 1855 census, there are 4 males and 2 females in their household. In the 1870 agricultural census he has 80 cleared and 80 unimproved acres of land. He owns 5 horses and 5 cows, along with 2 youngstock, 25 sheep and 11 pigs. He has harvested 400 bu. Wheat, 100 bu. Indian corn and 400 bu. Oats. There is also 100 lb. Wool, 400 lb. Butter and 30 tons of hay, as well as 150 bu. of potatoes and $15 worth of orchard produce. JONATHAN HAESSLY (16 Dec 1825 - 10 March 1907) born in Penn., he married on 20 May 1851in Dungannon, Ohio to Nancy Ann Fitzpatrick (born 28 Aug 1832 in Ohio; died 30 May 1905). The 1870 agricultural census shows him as owning 160 acres, 80 acres of which were cleared land. He owned 5 horses, and 3 cows, with 3 head of young stock, 11 sheep and 8 pigs. He had on hand 5000 bu. of wheat, 100 bu. of Indian corn, and 275 bu. of oats. He had no wool to declare for the census, but had 200 lb. Of butter, 2 ton of hay and 20 bu. of potatoes. PHILIP HAESSLY born 12 Oct 1829 in Berks Co. PA, the son of Philip Haessly and Anna Marie Spohn, he was 10 years old when his parents moved to Dungannon, Columbiana Co. Ohio. He first married Barbara Romans (born 1832 in Ohio) a sister of Anthony Romans who had married Philip's sister Catherine and settled in Ashford, WI On 12 Oct 1847 he was granted a patent for land in sections 22,23 and 29 in the Township of Ashford. Philip and Barbara were the parents of: Anthony, born 16 Oct 1856 and bapt in St. Martins, Ashford; died 3 Nov 1939 in Fdl, WI; married Catherine Friedle on 16 Nov. 1886 Joseph, born 10 Aug 1857 Philip, born 20 March 1858 and bapt at St. Martins, Ashford Mary E., born 1859 Lizzie, born in June 1861 and died 25 Sept 1867 Catherine, born 4 Apr 1862; married Peter Pies. MARY HEGNER Anna Mary Romens Hegner, was born in 2 June 1828 in Stundwiller, Al Sace Lorraine, France, the daughter of Antoine Romens and Marie Barbe Fischer. The Romens family came to America in 1840 with her parents, brothers and sisters, in 1840. She married William Hegner on 22 April 1847 in Dungannon, Columbiana Co. Ohio. In 1854 the Hegner family moved to Wisconsin, where William was granted a patent on 40 acres of land in section 13 of the Town of Ashford, Fond du Lac County WI. Also settling in the immediate area were Mary's brother and sister, Anthony Romens and his wife Catherine (Haessly) and Philip Haessly and his wife Barbara (Romens). The Hegners, Romens, Haesslys and Fitzpatricks were among the many families who settled here from Dungannon, Ohio. The 1855 census indicates that there were 2 male and 2 females in the Hegner household. On Sept 28, 1865, only 6 days after the birth of his daughter Sarah Ann, William Hegner was killed. He was returning home from the village of Elmore when his horses bolted, throwing him from his wagon. William was buried in St. Martin's cemetery in Ashford. Several years later, when the church wanted to add on a sacristy, most of the graves closest to the church were removed. But Mary Hegner was a struggling widow, and could not afford the expense of moving her husband's body, and so the sacristy was built over William's grave. Mary and her oldest son William, age 12, kept the family together, with the aid of relatives. But the struggle also began to take its toll on Mary, and on June 10, 1872/3 she died, leaving 7 surviving children, 6 of them under age 18. On her deathbed she begged Father Michels to take care of her two youngest children, daughters Theresa and Sarah. They were placed temporarily with the Mauch family, but in 1874, with the arrival of the 3 sisters in the parish, the 2 Hegner girls were placed with the sisters as permanent boarders. Immediately Theresa Hegner made application to be accepted as a member of the new religious community. Fifty-five years later she was elected the third Superior General of the School Sisters of St. Francis. The children of William and Mary Hegner:

JOHN P HUSTING born 18 Sept 1843 in Luxemburg, he married on 23 Nov 1873 to Maria Catherine Klotz, born 1849, the daughter of Ignatius and Johanna Klotz. He was the postmaster in New Cassel from 1892 - 1896. He first settled near Theresa in 1853, moving to New Cassel in 1863. They were the parents of: Mary I. Bella (Isabelle?) , born 25 Jan and bapt 28 Jan 1875; died 4 Oct 1875, age 8 months. Bertha E., born 22 Dec and bapt 23 Dec 1876 Ignatius, born 13 Dec 1878 and bapt 9 Jan 1879 Albert, 1879-1893; killed in a hunting accident. JOHANNA KLOTZ (nee Schneller); Johanna was born 24 Oct 1810 in Austria and in 1839 she married Ignatius Klotz, born 10 Sept 1803, the son of Nicholas and Maria Friedle Klotz. Ignatius was orphaned at a young age, but managed to educate himself. In his early life he was a shoemaker, later becoming a contractor and builder. The Schneller family originated in Untergiblen, Lech Tal, Bei Peute, Austria, and when the family emigrated to America, they settled in the Town of Eden, where one of Johanna's uncles had already purchased 1000 acres of land. The family arrived in Eden township on 9 Sept 1848 with four children: Maria Cresentia, Maria Catherine, Joseph Nicholas and Joseph Ignatius. Daughter Maria Catherine, who was born 4 Nov 1847 two months after their arrival in America, died 15 Sept 1848 shortly after their arrival in Eden. On 15 Dec 1856 the land was divided and entered under the names of Catherine Schneller, Crescentia Schneller and Johanna Klotz nee Schneller. In 1859 Ignatius Klotz started to build a stone house. Stone was hauled from the quarries in Eden. Before the house was completed, Ignatius stepped on a nail and it is presumed that he died on 12 Nov 1860 from blood poisoning. He is buried in Ashford. Johanna died 6 Sept 1887. Ignatius and Johanna were the parents of:
JOSEPH NICHOLAUS KLOTZ born in Austria Aug. 8, 1841, the son of Ignatius and Johanna Schneller Klotz, he came to Wisconsin with his parents when he was 8. His uncle, Fr. Anton Schneller was instrumental in getting him to attend St. John's College, Fordham, NY and he later claimed that he received five years education in the two years at college. In 1858, at age 17, he was offered a trip to California on the sailing vessel of his uncle, Capt. Schneller. His farm experience helped him obtain a job driving freight wagons from San Francisco to Sacramento. He eventually returned to Fond du Lac county in 1865, and he served as sheriff of Fond du Lac county in 1874. On Jan 11, 1868 he married Miss Mary Honora Mahoney, born 31 Oct.
1848, the daughter of Michael and Catherine Kirby Mahoney. They were the
parents of nine children:

THOMAS McCARTY farmer, section 4, Town of Ashford - born in County Leitrin, Ireland on 18 Nov. 1837, son of Michael and Ann McCarty, who emigrated to America in 1847 and lived in Providence, RI until 1853 when they came to Ashford. Thomas married on 17 June 1869 Miss Mary Lloyd, born 10 May 1847, the daughter of George and Ann Lloyd, who emigrated from Ireland to America in 1840; she was born in Dutchess Co. NY and her family settled in Byron in 1849. Thomas died 21 June 1905 and she died 11 March 1917. In the 1870 agricultural census they are listed as owning 120 acres, 80 acres of which were cleared and in production. They owned 4 horses, 3 cows, 6 young stock, 30 sheep and 3 pigs. MICHAEL McCULLOUGH Michael was born in Ireland in 1816, and spent his early life at driving of a jaunting car. When twenty-five years of age, he decided to make his home in America. The first year after his arrival he was employed as a porter in a wholesale house in New York City, and from 1842 to 1849 he was engaged at farm labor in Dutchess Co. NY. During that time he met and married Miss Ann Carry (24 June 1824 - 2 Dec 1897, age 73 per church) and in 1849 the emigrated to Wisconsin, reaching Fond du Lac county in November. He settled in Auburn Township, purchased 80 acres of land in section 8, and began to develop his farm. In the 1850 Federal Census, the McCulloughs owned 20 improved and 60 unimproved acres, the value of which was $250. They had $10 worth of farm implements. Livestock included 2 milch cows, 2 work ox, 1 youngstock and 10 swine, for a total value of $86. They also had 10 bu. of wheat, 20 bu. of Indian corn, 50 bu. of oats. They had 100 bu. of Irish potatoes, 8 bu. of barley, 30 bu. of buckwheat and 40 lb. Of butter. Michael died 7 May 1895, at age 75 (church) They were the parents of:

In 1893 he purchased and moved to the farm on the opposite side of the road, where he remained until his death in 1898 at age 73. Church records indicate he died 17 Jan. 1900 at age 72. His wife died in 1900 at age 67. Cemetery records say she was born Sept 8, 1834 and died Aug. 9, 1902). They were the parents of:

MICHAEL SCHNEIDER born 15 Dec 1835 in Horbach, Germany, the son of Egidius and Elizabeth Zerwes Schneider; he arrived in New Orleans in March 1857 after spending 58 days on the ocean. By May 31 of that same year he was in Milwaukee. From there he went to the Lake Superior copper mined until 1865. In Sept 1865 he came to New Cassel, where he opened the first grain elevator, and helped build the first railroad through Campbellsport. He managed Findeisen Elevator for a number of years. He also owned a farm in the town of Auburn, which he left in charge of his sons while he purchased grain in the Dakotas until 1893. In 1907 he traveled the western part of the United States, and in 1912 he visited his homeland of Germany. He married first Elizabeth Scheid Schaub, born 11 Jan. 1838, the eighth child of John Philip and Katherine Weiskepf Scheid, and the widow of Peter Schaub who died on 30 March 1865 while in the military during the civil war. Elizabeth died on 28 Aug 1878, and on 4 Oct 1882 Michael married her niece, Mary Scheid, born 14 May 1854. |

They are listed in all of the various collections taken to establish the church, but evidently not able to pay in full, for a credit order in the church records states "The remainder of A. Wagner's old acct. to be charged to profit & loss".
