Mrs John Westphal Dies
After Illness of Two Days
The entire community was shocked Friday afternoon to hear of the death of
Mrs John Westphal, one of the best known and popular women of the city.
She was apparently in her usual health and was celebrating her 67th
birthday Wednesday when she suffered a heart attack while dressing for a
party friends were giving in her honor. She never recovered and died at 2:10
p.m. Friday.
Mrs Westphal, the former Elizabeth Touton, was born in Worcester, Mass.,
Aug 28 1873. she came with her parents to Fort Atkinson when she was five
years old, and had since resided here. She was graduated from the local high
school in 1893, and was married to John Westpahl in 1896. Mr Westphal was
proprietor of a dry goods store and Mrs Westphal assisted her husband,
becoming known to everyone.
Both Mr and Mrs Westphal were public spirited and assisted in many
movements for the community's benefit. They were especially active in the
work of the Congregational church. He died in 1927 and since that time, Mrs
Westpahl had contiued her church and social work.
Survivors are a son0in0law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Sheldon Vance, and a
grandson, Jimmy Vance, all of Fort Atkinson; a brother, Chas Touton, and a
sister, Mrs John Joerg, both of Janesville.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Congregational
Church, the Rev. D Q Grabill officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen
Cemetery.
