The county seat of Marinette County, Wisconsin, is Marinette. The town was officially organized in 1855. The county was established 27 Feb 1879, and formed from territory that was formerly part of Oconto County.

Logging was the main occupation, and the city was home to dozens of sawmills; after about 1900 lumbering gave way to diversified manufacturing (the last sawmill closed in 1931). Marinette took it title from the village which was named for Marinette Chevalier (1793-1865), a French Chippewa metis, wife of John B. Jacobs, and later of William Farnsworth; the last-named settled on this site in 1822.

The county has a total area of 1,550 square miles (4,000 km2), of which 1,399 square miles (3,620 km2) is land and 151 square miles (390 km2) (9.7%) is water. It is the third-largest county in Wisconsin by land area and fifth-largest by total area. Part of Marinette County borders Lake Michigan.
