Joseph Hollingsworth Dent Family

JOSEPH HOLLINGSWORTH DENT AND WIFE, ELIZABETH EMERSON DENT Joseph H. Dent was found in the 1855 Census of Brooklyn, Marquette Co. WI, males 4, females 2 and two years later he was dead at the age of 35 having been struck by a plough handle while farming on his land in Green Lake. Date of death, 7 July 1857. He left a wife and 4 young children. Joseph was born in 1821/22 in NY to Richard Dent and Jane (Jean) McGibbon. Richard having come to NY in 1804 with his parents, Joseph H. Dent and Nancy (Ann) Tonge from Maltby le Marsh, Lincolnshire, England. Richard and Jane were married in 1822 in NY. His brothers and sisters were, William M., John T., James S., Helen M., Olive, and Andrew B. John T. and Andrew B. served in the Civil War for the 31st Wisconsin Infantry and did not come home. Joseph H. Dent came to Wisconsin in 1839 and his parents and the rest of the family came to the territory of Wisconsin in 1842. In 1844, Joseph married Elizabeth Emerson, born in NY, daughter of Joseph Emerson and Mary Burdick. Their children were Wilson Marcellus Dent, born 5 April, 1845 Oak Grove, Dodge Co. WI, who married Laura Bailey 12 Nov 1865 in Ripon, WI, Thomas Willis Dent, born 8 October 1846 in Beaver Dam, Dodge Co. WI, who married Emeline Cannon, 8 Nov 1868. Lewis Dent born 27 April, 1854 (age 6 in 1860 census) and Nancy Jane Dent born 10 May 1848 (age 10 in 1860 Census) and believed to have married a Poole. He is buried in the Seventh Day Cemetery, south of Berlin, WI. There is also a small stone that reads "son of JH & E Dent". Elizabeth and children were in the 1860 Census Brooklyn, Marquette Co. and had 80 acres, 30 'developed' valued at $1,200. With 3 milch cows, and 2 swine. Produced 244 bushels irish potatoes and 200 lbs of butter. She is 39. Elizabeth Dent remarried 27 December 1864 to Samuel Cannon of Lake Pardeville at the ME Church, Dartford, Green Lake, WI. Her date of death and burial place is also unknown at this time. Their sons, Wilson M. and Thomas Willis served in the Civil War.
