Letter From an [Anonymous] Old Settler

Oxford village no. 1 was plotted and laid out on the west side of the mill dam. On this site two hotels were built,
one store and some dwelling houses. The first hotel that the town or village of Oxford had, was and is now standing
on the south road from oxford going west and is occupied by Chas. Gaffney. After this was built the travel past this
hotel was so great that it could not accomodate nearly all the teamsters and travelers, so in the spring of 1854
another hotel was built on the north road and on the site now owned by Aug. Lippert. This hotel also did a flourishing
business. After a space of time this hotel was burned down. It was again rebuilt and again burned down. This property
has changed hands many times.

This village was very promising at first. Dr. S. A. Pease was the first doctor, first printer and first newspaper man.
The name of the paper was either The Oxford Times or The Oxford News. It was a two leaf paper. The Doctor
did not meet with success here so after a time he went to Montello where he had great success as a doctor and newspaper
man. He founded the Montello Express which today is and was when the Doctor lived, a first class county paper.

Our second doctor was Dr. J. F. Stillman who lived here many years and was among the homebuilders of the little village
across the dam.
