and Marquette County, Wisconsin, USA
Contributed by Sandy Schultz
Generation No. 1 1. AUGUST1 WECKWERTH was born March 02, 1805 in Posen, Prussia, and died Unknown in Before 1900. He married HANNA BERENTINE CHRISTIANE BERNDT April 06, 1834 in Hammer, Kreis Czarnikau, Posen Province, Prussia. She was born August 19, 1815 in Cro?ewo, Kreis Czarnikau, Posen, Preussia, and died August 21, 1891 in Township of Crystal Lake (Budsin), Marquette Co., WI. Notes for AUGUST WECKWERTH: In one of the volumes of "Germans to America", I found this family: Weckwerdth: T., age 50, Hanna, age 40, Jette, age 19, Louise, age 15, Ernestine, age 12, Julius, age 9, Chris, age 5, and Gustav, .07 infant. Dad was a farmer from Germany. They sailed on the ship "Deutschland" from Hamburg to New York, arriving June 12, 1853. -------------- Matthias Steinke from near Hamburg writes: Weckwerths are mentioned at the Lutheran Church in Runau(Runowo) Kreis Czarnikau, Posen. LDS film #0752812 From Darrel Wood? This all sounds very interesting. I have not connected Andreas Weckwerth to the later Weckwerths in my tree. But I believe that he is the connection that makes the later generations cousins as my family stories claim. But I do know that I have an August Weckwerth, an Augusta Weckwerth in the family. Their parents were John Christopher Weckwerth and Eva Schwandt. John C and Eva also had a son John Frederick. So, the names in your family and the names in my family are similiar. However, that does not mean much as those names are common in Prussia. Just looked at some of my records I have gleamed from Prussia: marriage record of August Weckwerth and Hanna Berentine Christiane Berndt in Czarnikau on April 6, 1834. This is your ancestors! Also, from my notes, my Johann Christoph was born in 1822 in Hammer (which is very close to Czarnikau) to Johann Weckwerth and Rosina Priebe. So, your August Weckwerth would be more likely a brother to Johann Weckwerth (married to Rosina Priebe). ---------------- List of colonists in the area Netzedistrict in 1776-1798" in the Deutsche Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift im Wartheland, Heft 5/6, 3. Marquette Co. courthouse records list a Fred Weckwerth who died on August 21, 1900. Generation No. 2 2. GUSTAV2 WECKWERTH (AUGUST1) was born December 12, 1853 in Lubcz, Czarnikau, Posen, and died March 05, 1924 in WI. Notes for GUSTAV WECKWERTH: This family owned a farm on the south shore of Tuttle Lake, WI. They owned nice horses and dairy cows. The 1900 census finds Gustav's brother, Frederick, living with the family. He was born in April of 1858 in WI. He could read and write, but could not speak English. Gustave was a farmer. He immigrated in 1854. He had a mortgage on his farm--schedule 17. The family had 9 living children when this census was taken, Anna and another child have left home. Minnie's brother, Julius Draeger, took over the farm. He eventually sold it to an investment group, and it is a campground called "Camp Indian Sands" today.
