When Chuck Sanborn prepared to go overseas in 1943, he got a 20 percent pay raise from his employer, the U.S. Army. He decided to keep $20 of his $45 pay check for spending money, though he didn't know what he would spend it on. He would send $25 a month back home. "If you put it in the bank, I'll have a pretty neat nest egg when I get home," he wrote his mother. "But if you need it, don't be afraid to spend it." "He never got the money," his mother, Ellen Sanborn, said this week. Chuck joined the Army Rangers in December. On Jan. 22, 1944, he was killed in action at Anjiou Beach in Italy. His mother joined the local chapter of the Gold Star Mothers. There were about 12 mothers and wives of men killed in World War II. "We got together and talked about things, and it helped," she said. She and others later started Lake City's American Legion Auxiliary. Ellen now lives at the Lake City Nursing Home where she was honored on Veteran's Day by the auxiliary's District President, Marie Goede of Plainview, as a 50-year member of the auxiliary. She is Lake City's last living Gold Star Mother. Ellen said her son wanted to quit high school to join the Army when the U.S. became involved in the war. "I wanted him to finish high school," she said. She talked to Milton Boock, then the principal at Lincoln High School who convinced Chuck to stay in school and graduate. After high school he went to work on a new ammunitions plant in Baraboo, Wis. There, he met another young man. The two of them decided to enlist together. Once in the military, he volunteered for the Rangers. On Dec. 22, 1943, he left for Italy. "We didn't see him again after that," Ellen said. Harold Charles Sanborn is buried at Ft. Snelling National Cemetary. For years Ellen and her husband took flowers to his grave frequently. While she is no longer able to do that, other members of the family continue to. "It was a big sacifice for him, and it was a big sacifice for me," she said. "I sacrificed him. It's the worst thing that could have happened." (End of story). She was originally named Elin.

He had a special life event either printed or narrated.14 This story is taken from a paper labeled "HAROLD BERNARD SANBORN AND HIS FIRST TWENTY-ONE YEARS". This story was narrated by Harold Sanborn and typed by Mary Miller. When I was 2 years old, my sister Ellen made me a sailor dress and my brother Laurence a sailor suit. They took a picture of us dressed in these clothes. I still remember that dress, I called it my picture taking dress. When I was 4 years old, I went to kindergarten at the old red brick Methodist church basement. Then next I went to the little 4 grade Washington school two blocks from our home. 'Then I went to the Lincoln school down on Prairie street. I went there until I was a sophomore. In the spring of 1912, I got diptheria. It was all over town, and 2 people died of the black type. I had to live in an Army tent in our back yard for quite a while so as not to expose the rest of the family. I didn't go back to school again. That summer I started to work in the Strandberg Cut Glass factory. I got $5.00 a week to start with. I worked 2 months and then I got $6.00 a week, then $7.00, and as I got better I kept going up. I worked myself up until I was putting on the finishing work after the glass was dipped in acid. (sulphuric and hydrofluoric) I used to help the boss do the dipping. We had to wear wool shirts and rubber gloves. The acid was in lead tanks. A fan sucked up the fumes. We always got a headache from it. When I was 16 years old I had my tonsils and adenoids removed by Dr. Cochrane at the office; his sister gave me chloroform. I was sick for 2 weeks with a sore throat. After that, I went back to work. About the same year, I bought an old cornet. The valves kept sticking, so after I earned some money, I bought a better one. Then I took lessons from Alfred Kalkbrener, a good cornet player who was also the band leader in Lake City, Minnesota where I lived. I took lessons for one year during which time I learned to single, double, and triple tongue. Then I played in the Lake City band until went out west to Winlock, Washington. My sister Annie worked for the O'Connel Lumber Co. I got a job there as time-keeper. The timber was 10 miles from town. They had their own railroad and engines. The engines were different from the ones used on other railroads. The timber was very large and tall. The timber consisted of Spruce, Fir, and a few Cedars. The cross-cut saws were very large. They had their own work train with living quarters on them. One work train was for the Japs who worked on the railroad. They were not allowed in the woods. The trees must have been 100 feet tall or even taller. It sounded like a cannon going off when a tree would come down. I had to walk all around and check all the men in the woods. It was a dangerous job, and I had to keep time for the Japs too. I worked there for a while and then I went to Tacoma and got a job in the ship yards. My sister Esther lived 16 miles from town. They had electric trains in Tacoma made up of two cars running on rails. A third rail was elevated and through this rail flowed the electric current to power the train. Esther and her husband had a chicken ranch; lots of white leghorn hens, 100 of them in a coop, and there were 5 coops. They also had prune trees:(dark blue plums), and peach trees. Her husband Myron had lots to do taking care of this place. They had a few big tall Spruce trees which could supply enough wood for a long time. I went back to Tacoma and lived there. I worked as a stevedore on the docks unloading and loading ships. Lots of heavy work in this job. We loaded pure bricks of tin which weighed 90 pounds each, and all kinds of other stuff. The pay was good. Sometimes I worked 20 hours in a stretch until the ship was unloaded and loaded again. While there I got the Spanish Flu and was sick for 2 weeks. I stayed part of the time out at my sister's place. I was very sick. Lots of people died from the Spanish Flu. After the Armistice uses signed at 11 o'clock on November 11, 1918, 1 came back home to Lake City, Minnesota again. (End of story). He had Social Security Number 473-07-9165.15 He had a special life event either printed or narrated. This paper was titled Things I Remember by Harold B. Sanborn. He was buried in National Cemetary, Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, USA. Special Note: Ellen purchased a large box of candy from Lindeen's grocery store located behind the house and sent it to him for Christmas 1943. She brought it home and wrapped it in brown paper and tied it with white cotton string. She never knew if he received but she always hoped the either he or his fellow Rangers enjoyed it. This note comes from a document sent to all the Harold and Ellen Sanborn children by Franklin Sanborn for Christmas 1995.
