Old Clayfield Cemetery Ellsworth Township, Pierce County, Wisconsin *************************************************************************** The Old Clayfield Cemetery is located on a hilltop in Section 35 of Ellsworth Township, south of the intersection of U.S. 10 and County DD, about three miles southeast of the Village of Ellsworth. The Catholic residents of the Clayfield area were first attended as a mission from Hudson, WI with mass being offered in the homes of Patrick Campbell, Richard Devereaux and Patrick Stafford.  In 1861 the land on which the cemetery is located was donated to the church by Patrick Stafford and a log church was erected there, with the cemetery surrounding the church.  In the 1880's the church was replaced by a new frame church which was built one mile south on County DD, and a new cemetery was begun just north of the new church.  The old church was used for storage for a few years and then was torn down in the early 1900's.   The cemetery records have been lost and some of the markers have been removed.  The following is a list of those whose markers were there in the summer of 1981.  Compiled by Reta Sanford September 1981. ************************************************************************** This web site and its contents in the format presented, except where otherwise noted on the page, are copyrighted by Debbie Barrett and may not be copied, altered, converted nor uploaded to any electronic system or BBS, nor linked from any "pay-for-view" site, linked in such a manner as to appear to be part of another site including "frame" capturing, nor included in any software collection or print collection of any type without the express written permission of the author of this site, namely, Debbie Barrett.
