CARL GUSTAF NELSON
POLK COUNTY’S FIRST SWEDES
Carl Gustaf Nelson, born in Uråsa, Sweden, Feb. 28, 1831, died July 7, 1901. They came to America ? to New York April 29, 1864.? Gustaf’s brother, Magnus who settled in Grantsburg in 1853 after going to Sweden to fetch his sister, Christina, her three sons and three daughters, namely: Nels Daniel Anders, Erlund, (Alex), Andrew, Magnus Carl Gustaf, Johanana, Ida, Inga Lisa, Britea who married Lewis Pederson and settled near Horse Creek. Magnus Nelson brought his family o the Sand Lake (Osceola-Dresser) area. There they settled on farms; some were just grants. They established their homes on Lotus Lake/East Lake. August Nelson was a leader in the organizing the Bethesda Lutheran Church. Magnus Nelson was the first Judge in Burnett ad his daughter the first Sept. of Schools (Christina Nelson). [note 1860 Polk and 1870 Burnett U.S. census] The Gustaf Nelsons were the first Swedish family in Polk Co. The family was the early pioneers. A strong link has been forged with families in the area of Sweden from which the family came. We have great pride in our heritage. The Swen Anderson family purchased land on East Lake.
