The Yorkville Cemetery and it's Pioneers 1844 through 1907

I saw it first, a Prairie wild
unvexed by man's remolding way
where sweet spring flowers bloomed and smiled
and nature revealed in her sway.

No plowshare ever and scarred it's face
or turned its fragrant beauties down
No hand of man did yet erase
It's wild but lovely virgin crown

Part of the red man's wide demesne
Pre-empted by a conquering race
Midst winter snow and summer's sheen
Destined to be their resting place

True twas a lovely spot they chose
Those wanderers- a pilgrim band-
Where in it's beauty bloomed the rose
Fair emblem of their native hand.

I saw when first they broke the green
And laid away their mournful men
And at the bitter tears they shed

An as its boundaries they traced
Those men that then were in their prime
And thought of dangers they had faced
To make a home in this new clime

I wonder if they thought about
The lasting impress of their deed
And that ³Gods Acre² once laid out
From scenes of grief should na'er be freed.

Or did they stop to moralize
On lifes uncertain fleeting breath
And gathering wisdom from the wise
Thus thoughtfully prepare for death

What e'er they thought, their works remain
And shall endure, perhaps for ay
Though they themselves are freed from pain
And mingled with their kindred clay

Tis true of all the world I wot
Grief is the compliment of joy
But in this consecrated spot
Is rest at last without alloy

And here they rest those Pioneers
Their ashes consecrate the spot
And though we're lost in following years
Their memory ne'er will be forgot.
