A while
back I heard a story about a baby being found in a snow bank, during the
winter season before WWII. Through the auspices of a few people people
that knew all about it, I learned the story and share it here.
Apparently
it was the first week in February 1941 and Dr. H. A. Smith of Winter found
it necessary to take Mrs. Henry Armstrong from her rural home near Ojibwa
to the hospital in Park Falls to deliver a baby.
The roads
were ice covered and slippery, and the Dr. was in a hurry so he took the
short cut up Price County Road B from Highway 70 to Park Falls. While
on this road he lost control of the vehicle and ended up buried in a snow
bank.
After a short
while a gentleman from Exland happened by and Mrs. Armstrong was transferred
to his car and the three of them continued on to the Park Falls Hospital.
It was not
until they got there that they realized that the baby had been born and
was now missing.. It was figured that the baby must have dropped
out during the transfer between vehicles. Dr. Smith and a nurse rushed
back to his car and found the baby wrapped up in an unknown blanket laying
in the front seat of the car (Mrs Armstrong had been in the back seat).
The Dr. and
the Nurse rushed the baby boy to the hospital, leaving Dr. Smith’s car
still in the ditch.
Another man passing
by had discovered the baby in the snow bank. Luckily he stopped, wrapped
it in the blanket, placed it in the vehicle and rushed to Philips to get
the Sheriff, thinking some sort of foul play had taken place.
When the Price County
Sheriff’s Deputy arrived the car was there but the baby was now missing.
It took a while for folks to sort out what had happened.
This was the
way that 8 pound Ronald Armstrong came into the world… Rescued from
a Snowbank and leaving a trail of confusion.
