Descendants of Wilhelm Bonnin

Submitted by: Gary Lloyd Pegelow
If anyone can help with additional info on the Bonnin family, I would appreciate it.  I did connect my mother's family to the Posen Family.

Where maiden name is unknown, I used the married name within quotation marks or no surname at all.

Family member No. 2 is questionable due to mother only being 15 years of age at time of marriage.  Thus the ? after his name.  It is a possibility, biologically, therefore the inclusion of this individual.

Descendants of Wilhelm Bonnin

Generation No. 1

1.  WILHELM1 BONNIN was born 1817 in Province of Posen, Germany.  He married ROSA "BONNIN" Abt. 1845 in Province of Posen, Germany.  She was born 1825 in Province of Posen, Germany, and died 15 May 1894 in New London, Outagamie, Wisconsin.

Notes for WILHELM BONNIN:

The Province of Posen, Germany is now Pozna'n, Poland.

Is Fred Bonnin, born 1841, a son of Wilhelm and Rosa?  If so, Rosa would have been about 15 when married.  Also, Rosa could be a second wife.
UPDATE: Based on The History of Outagamie Wisconsin Page 1248 --
Frederick Bonnin 1841 married to Augusta List 1842 is probably a nephew of Wilhelm and Rosa (Klaveter).

1870 Census for Liberty, Outagamie, Wisconsin

William 53, Rosa 45, David 24, Christian 17, Charlie 14 (last born in Prussia), Herman 12, Julie 10, Minnie 7, and William 4.

A Lena Bonnin, born 1864, is found as a servant on the 1880 census at New London, Waupaca County.  She was born in Germany after Wilhelm and Rosa emigrated so she cannot be their child but is probably related.

THE DAILY NORTHWESTERN, SATURDAY EVENING, MAY 13, 1916

HANGS IN DOORWAY - FARMER IS SUICIDE.

NORDHEIM BATCHELOR USES BELT LACING TO STRANGLE HIMSELF AND THE BODY IS FOUND BY A NEIGHBOR.

NO CAUSE FOR ACT TRACED.

The end came many hours before the shocking discovery was made-Customer calls for eggs and enters home-Sheriff takes charge of remains-Parents living near New London-Details.

Leonard Bonnin, a batchelor of about 35 years of age, was found dead at his home on the old Charles Warren farm, between Jackson and Main Streets in Nordheim, about 5 a.m. this morning.

He had committed suicide by hanging himself with a piece of belt lacing, one end which was attached to a spike driven in the door casing. Indications were that he had strangled to death after considerable effort, for his feet were on the floor and his face was discolored and bruised from having come into forcible contact with the door while in his death struggle. The appearance of the body indicated he had been dead for at least 24 hours and perhaps longer.

Mrs. Raddatz, a neighbor, discovered the body when she went to Bonnin's home early this morning to get some eggs. She immediately notified the sheriff's office by telephone and Sheriff Williams and Undersheriff Spalding went to the place, cut the body down and had it removed to Soper's undertaking establishment. where it is awaiting the instruction of the dead man's relatives for its disposition.

FINDING OF BODY. None of the people in the vicinity of Bonnin's home had seen him Thursday or Friday. Mrs. Raddatz went to his house yesterday after eggs, but there

was no response to her raps on the door and she did not attempt tn enter the house. This morning, however, when she repeated the visit and again received no response she tried the door, found it unlocked and entered the place. The bodv was hanging from the doorway of an inner room.

Bonnin. who was reputed to be a man of steady habits and thrifty disposition,

recently bought the farm where he hung himself, and had since lived there alone.

He worked at the plant of the Oshkosh Soap company from April 1 until last

Wednesday evening and when he left the factory at the close of the day's work

said nothing about not returning. It was supposed he was just taking a short vacation as he had not called for the pay due him. Bonnin had also worked for a number of years for the Cook and Brown Lime Company's sand pit near Spring Brook.

He was not a drinking man and his habits were excellent it is stated by some of those who knew him.

NO REASON ASSIGNED. No reason is known for his suicidal act for it is believed to have been in good financial circumstances but it had been noticed that his health of late was not as good as formerly.

Sheriff Williams and Undersheriff Spalding made a search of Bonnin's home and effects. They found $7.57 in his pocketbook. a silver watch and chain. a bunch of keys. a photograph of himself and a friend, evidently taken some years ago, and two letters addressed to him. One of the letters was postmarked New London and had not been opened.

There was nothing else of value found in the place and the only food discovered was a quantity of potatoes.

It is stated that Bonnin's parents live on a farm near New London and had two sisters.

One of the sisters, Mrs. Bladow lives on a farm on the Omro Road and the other resides at Shiocton, Wis. He also had a cousin living at New London.  All of the immediate relatives have been notified of Bonnin's. Some of them are expected to arrive in the ciry this afternoon.

SHAWANO  COUNTY  BIOGRAPHIES

Pages 272-273

HON. CHRIS BONNIN, the representative of Shawano county in the State Legislature, and the leading merchant of Bonduel, Wis., is a native of central Germany, born February 18, 1853. His father, William Bonnin, was the owner of a small tract of land in Germany and supported his family by day's labor. In 1857, after a voyage of seventeen weeks, he arrived in the United States, locating in Washington county, Wis., where he lived until 1860, removing then to New London, this State. At that time there were no railroads to New London, and they made the journey by boat from Oshkosh. The father has since resided in that locality, and the mother there died in 1894. Of their family five children are yet living.  In politics the father is a Democrat, and in religious belief a Lutheran.

Mr. Bonnin, the subject of this sketch, acquired his education in the district schools, and during his early boyhood began to work for neighboring farmers. He was also employed in the lumber woods and on the river, following any honest pursuit that would gain him a living. Thus his time was passed until after he had arrived at man's estate. He then chose as a companion and helpmeet on life's journey Miss Doratha Bussian, a native of Outagamie county, Wis., where their marriage was celebrated in 1877. They located upon a farm and lived in the vicinity of New London for two years, after which they located near Clintonville, Wis.; but after a short time they made a home near Centralia. Returning to New London, Mr. Bonnin lived with his parents for a time, and subsequently went to Shiocton, Outagamie county, where he was engaged in the restaurant business. In 1882 he embarked in merchandising in Slabtown, Shawano county, but the same year came to Bonduel, and resumed the same line of business. He bought out a store which his predecessors had failed to make a paying one, and from the beginning met with success, securing an extensive trade, and now having one of the largest and most prosperous mercantile establishments in Shawano county outside of the county seat. The business was at first located in a small frame building, but in 1884 the town was visited by a disastrous fire and his store and much of his stock was destroyed. With characteristic energy he began to rebuild, and erected the present substantial and commodious business room, which is now taxed to the utmost in order to accommodate his large trade. To Mr. and Mrs. Bonnin have been born six children who are yet living, namely: Ernest, Henrietta, Emma, Lottia, Celia and Rosetta. They have also lost two children.

While prominently identified with the Republican party in his town and County, it might be said that Mr. Bonnin's sympathies were at one time with the Democracy, yet when he arrived at the age when the right of franchise was granted him he allied himself with the Republican party, and has since been one of its stalwart advocates and leaders in this locality.  He has frequently been called to serve in public office, having been assessor of Liberty township, Outagamie county, while for four years he was treasurer of Hartland township, Shawano county, and for several years past has been justice of the peace. He was chairman of Hartland township for one year, and in 1894 was re-elected, but resigned in order to enter upon his duties as State Representative, and today he is a leading member of the House.  His own educational privileges were limited, and he was thus made to realize the advantage of good schools, which he has always endeavored to secure in the community in which he lives.  He did effective service in the interest of education while acting as clerk of School District No. 1, for four years.  His untiring energy and practical business ability are exerted in public office to the benefit of the positions with which he is connected. He has also served as postmaster of Bonduel for three years.  He has represented the leading insurance companies of the United States, and also served as emigrant agent for this locality.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Bonnin are members of the Lutheran Church. His natural intellectual ability has been developed by years experience, and on matters of business he is frequently consulted by men who are many years his senior and who rely implicitly upon his sound judgment.  His own business career has been one of success, in which he has never adopted questionable methods or unfair means to further his interests.  He is ever ready to encourage or assist any movement that is calculated to prove of public benefit and he has a wide acquaintance, and enjoys the confidence of all with whom he has been brought in contact.

Notes for CHRISTIAN HERMAN BONNIN:

To whom it may concern,

I am looking for information on Christian H. Bonnin who was a senior at the U. of Wisconsin in 1924.  He listed his major as Law.  He was also a member of Delta Pi Epsilon and there is a chance he might have been a founding member as that group was formed about 1921.  The yearbook entry is difficult to read on-line but it appear s his home is recorded as Shawano.

Any information will be appreciated.
