St. Elias Lutheran cemetery
was founded in 1876 and is located in Herman Township, western
Shawano County. Many thanks to the Shawano FHC for walking
this cemetery and creating a list of the residents. When
someone really loves a project and takes pride in it, it shows!
which is the case with Matthew and this cemetery project -- MEGA THANKS to Matthew Otto
and his camera for permanently preserving this cemetery in photos so
we will always have a record of these headstones images. The
links to the photos are in the SURNAME column. Very
nicely done, Matt! I hope this will inspire other people to find a
cemetery near to them and take your camera along for a walk through!

NOTE: Matthew went back to the cemetery and for the very
hard-to-read headstones, he took chalk and outlined the
inscriptions. And, for the first time that I know of, we have some
complete death dates that were always illegible before and some
dates that we thought "were carved in stone" are now corrected. For
these stones, you will see the link on the surname of the original
photo and then, under the first name, you'll see
chalk enhanced.
Click on the link to see the second legible photos. And
because Matthew has shared these photos with us, others won't have
to go through this process to read the stones in the future.
Many thanks!
Here's an example of the BIGGEST CONTRAST I saw so far:
