A little background history on this cemetery:  Before 1895 the dead were buried on the home property or sent back to their former homes.  It seems that all civic problems had to be incorporated.  It was so with the Forest Cemetery.  The village fathers agreed that a cemetery was necessary.  They purchased an acre of land from the late Tim Packard a half mile from the town. The land was marked for lots and dedicated late that year or early in 1896.  Some of the dead were removed form the private graves and transferred to the new cemetery.  Their graves marked with marble or granite headstones.
     The oldest headstone in Forest Cemetery marks the grave of Hattie Dobbert, who died in 1881 at the age of two.  The late Sam Hunter, Civil Was veteran and pioneer settler told the story of her death.
     The Hunter family came to the Town of Plover in the summer of 1883 and that winter Mr. Hunter worked on a logging project at the Eau Claire Dells.
     He walked form the camp to his home every Saturday night and back again on Sunday.  One Saturday night as he passed the Dobbert home, later the Gerit Bultman farm on Highway N, Mrs. Dobbert called to him for help.  Her daughter was very ill.  The nearest doctor was at Wausau, but Mr. Hunter turned around and walked to Wausau, arriving about midnight.  He located a doctor and they started out over the dark hills in the doctor’s cutter.  They reached the Dobbert farm sometime Sunday afternoon, too late, the child had died.  The doctor said of diphtheria.
     Mrs. Dobbert prepared the body for burial and Sam Hunter read the Twenty-third Psalm from her Bible, and they both repeated the Lord’s Prayer, before the child was buried deep in the snow on the farm.  A wooden box served as a coffin.
     The area around the cemetery was wooded.  The acre was still uncleared of trees.  It was named Forest Cemetery.  Since that time more land has been added to cover several acres.  The concrete building used as a mausoleum for the winter burials in now a place for tools and cemetery equipment.  The mortuary in connection with the Kopitske-Staus Funeral Home has been used since it was built by the late A. J. Kopitzke.
     Flower gardens have been made, water provided and a sexton employed to keep the grass moved and the graves clear of withered flowers.
     There was a time when raspberry bushes grew in the cemetery and the grass was cut with a scythe.  It is now like a beautiful park, a peaceful place of beauty and well kept grounds.
