SHAWANO COUNTY'S GOLD STAR
LIST
Researched & copied by Cobi Burke
After the end of
the war, the government sent these moms overseas to visit the burial
sites of their children. The following contains information about
those brave men and women from Shawano County, Wisconsin who died of
wounds or disease during World War I. The database
includes name, rank, age, place living at time of entry into service,
service record (abbreviated version), place and date of death, place
of burial, and cause of death.
The database includes name, rank,
age, place living at time of entry into service, service record
(abbreviated version), place and date of death, place of burial,
and cause of death. You'll notice that (pneu) pneumonia is
listed as a frequent cause of death. In 1918, the INFLUENZA
epidemic killed more people than World War 1. Because of the
lack of antibiotics, flu victims frequently developed pneumonia and
pleurisy that resulted in their death.
