An Old Timer by Joyce Sperberg
My grandfather, Albert Sperberg, whose parents came to the United
States from Germany, settled in the township of Richmond, about two
miles southeast of Red River. My Grandfather was born here in 1884.
The first home in which my Grandfather lived was constructed of
logs having two rooms, a kitchen and bedroom. When he was about four,
his father took a homestead near the Reservation. Here they built a
frame house with six rooms and other buildings of lumber. When my
Grandfather saw this for the first time, he thought it was a palace.
The first time my Grandfather came to Shawano with his father to
sell some grain, he was about eight years old. There were a few
stores, among which were Uphams and Leigs. The sidewalks were made of
boards, and the streets were of mud. In some places, they had stones
laying across the streets so people could walk across. Down the middle
of the streets, they had narrow strips of stone forming two narrow
lanes on which the wagon wheels would fit to prevent them for getting
stuck. Where the public library now stands, there was a fountain to
water horses, and where the Badger is, there was a livery stable.
Along the streets, there were hitching posts where the people would
tie their horses while they attended to their business; and in back of
where the Montgomery Ward is, there were stables in which you could
keep your horse and wagon if you intended to stay a day in town. You
could bring your own feed along and feed and water your horse here. At
this time, the people didn't handle much money. Most of their trading
was done by exchanging a bag of wheat for a cord of wood or something
similar to this. Another interesting place in Shawano was near the
paper mill. There was a mill here where you cold take your grains to
be ground. Wheat was ground into flour, and other grains were ground
into cattle feed. The bridge that goes across the river by Goers
Garage was a wooden bridge at the time. There was also a grain
elevator across the river here.
They didn't go to town very often for it was such a great distance
of go by horse and wagon. They had to start early in the morning so
they could return before dark. During the winter, they didn't go to
town unless it was an emergency. They would get all their supplies
for the winter in the fall before it became too cold. All summer and
fall, they prepared for the winter by canning foods and smoking meats.
He had to walk four miles to school. The school term was three
month in the summer and three in the winter. He hardly ever attended
school in the winter because it was too cold, and the snow drifts were
too deep that it was almost impossible to walk through them.
When he was eighteen, he went to work in a logging camp for the
first time. Here he worked on a jammer, which is used to lead logs on
a sled. It was not one as is used in the woods today for loading logs.
They put two planks up against the sled and a chain around the middle
of the log and hooked it up to a horse, which pulled it up. When they
went up to the woods in the fall, they didn't come home until spring.
The evenings at camp were spent telling Paul Bunyon stories and
playing cards. From this time until he was twenty-four, he spent his
winters logging and his summers working on his father's farm. Then he
married my Grandmother and started farming.
Years later, he purchased a saw mill at Thornton which he ran for
quite a few years. The logs were brought to the mill by farmers to be
cut into lumber. At this time, many farmers were beginning to build
frame houses. They brought the logs by oxen and sled.
He also lived during the days of prohibition. He made liquor and
sold it for five dollars a gallon. My Grandmother was very much
against this because she was for prohibition.
He purchased one of the first cars that came to Shawano. You
weren't allowed to go down Main Street with your car because you would
scare the horses; so they went down the back streets and left them
parked there.
When they completed the Whitehouse Bridge, which was the first
concrete bridge around here, they had a party. Everyone for miles
around attended it. They danced on the bridge and had a good time.
This is one of their forms of recreation. Husking bees was another.
My Grandfather now lives in Red River.
This was probably written by Joyce in 1948 when Wisconsin
celebrated it's centennial most likely for a high school history or
English class. The essay is courtesy of Audrey Buettner Sperberg.

My Parents: Albert and Anna Sperberg
by Ruth Sperberg Schultz Habeck
My dad was born on January 20, 1884 in the Town of Richmond on a
farm by the reservation line. My mom, Anna Schwietzer, was born in
Indiana on June 2, 1889 coming to Wisconsin as a young girl. She lived
in Thornton with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Schwietzer, and had
a very hard childhood.
Dad and Mom were married September 23, 1908. They lived on the farm
my dad was born on until 1935. My mom was a housekeeper. And besides
having a big garden that was a job in itself, she raised and cared for
seven sons and four daughters.
I still remember my mom baking about eleven loaves of bread every
day and the sweet rolls with cinnamon and topped with frosting. We
lived on meat, eggs and vegetables from the garden. We never went away
from the table hungry.
I remember playing up in the hay mow and sliding down the straw
stack. I also liked it when we thrashed to watch them make the straw
stack. Then we would try to see if we could get to the top. Dad didn't
like that, but he never scolded.
With living on a farm and having a big family, everyone had their
chores to do. Dad always said, "Work before play." I still live up to
that saying. It always stuck with me.
Another thing that I recall is making maple syrup. Dad did this at night when the evening chores were done. We would sit out in the woods and watch. We could listen to the birds and sometimes we even saw deer.
With living next to the reservation, we would pick blackberries and
raspberries for Mom to can for winter. The shelves in the basement
were full for winter.
We had three miles to walk to school in the cold winter. Sometimes
we would get a ride on a sleigh. I did miss school a lot.
In 1935, Dad sold the farm and moved to Red River. He worked in a
saw mill in Thornton and after that he came to be a stone mason until
he retired in 1952.
After moving to Red River we had about two blocks to walk to
school. Then we didn't have a lot of work except to carry in water and
wood. Then we would help Mom make something for supper. After dinner
was washing dishes then schoolwork by lamp. We also had to clean house
every Saturday for Mom. Mom had a nice garden and strawberry patch in
Red River and we always helped her. We did have a comfortable life
with the love of our parents. I couldn't wait for summer vacation.
Then my niece (Joyce) came to stay. She was at our place almost a
summer. My mom always had room for one more and she loved her
grandchildren very much.
Joyce and I did things we really should not have done. One day we
got eggs out of the chicken coop and made mud cakes with them. My mom
said to dad she couldn't figure out why the chickens wouldn't lay as
many eggs as before. We never did tell what we did with them.
One thing that we couldn't hide was the time when Joyce, Bud and
myself found a pail of grease and put it all over the chicken windows.
It really made them look beautiful when the sun was shining. When mom
found out, guess who got the spanking? ...Me... Bud and Joyce had to
sit in a corner. I was crying and Joyce said to me, "Grandma can't hit
hard can she?". She's just got a little love tap. Joyce, being the
first grandchild of my mom and dad, never did anything wrong. That's
the only spanking I can remember that I ever got from my mom or dad.
Now that I'm older, I know I should have got more. My mom and dad were
not the kind of parents to spank, they just found extra work for us to
do. One thing that I can say about my parents is they were always
there when I needed them.
Mom passed away October 4, 1951 at the age of 62. She died of
cancer. My dad passed away March 17, 1964 of a heart attack.
There has been an empty spot in my heart ever since I think of them
every day.
I'm sure that we are having this reunion to get the family together
again. I'm sure mom and dad are looking down and glad to see us all
together again. As of this day, out of eleven children, there are four
sons and three daughters left. They had 30 grandchildren. Of all the
grandchildren they had, there are two that passed away: Joyce Sperberg
(Pieper), daughter of Harry and Beatrice, and Kenneth Warren Sperberg,
son of Warren and Margie Sperberg.

Yea, I see what here was told me.
See that wondrous glory shine.
Feel the spotless robes enfold me.
Know a golden crown is mine.
Thus before the throne so glorious,
Now I stand a soul victorious,
Gazing on that joy for aye
That shall never pass away.
