Henry Corwith of Chicago made the first entry of
government land in the territory now embraced by Taylor County on June 1, 1867.
A. E. Harder is recognized as the first permanent settler of the county,
establishing himself in December 1872 in what is now the City of Medford.
In 1875 Taylor County with its current boundaries was carved out of the
larger Chippewa, Lincoln and Clark counties and a bit of Marathon, with the
county seat at Medford. The county was probably named for Wisconsin's governor
at the time, William Robert Taylor. It was initially divided into four towns —
Westboro, Chelsea, Medford and Little Black — each stretching the width of the
county.
