Memorial Planned for Presbyterian Church Cemetery, LdF.
The Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) is planning to place
a memorial at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lac du Flambeau in
the spring or early summer of 2004. This memorial will list names
of Tribal members who are buried in the cemetery but do not have an
individual marker because the exact location of the burial is unknown.
If you have a relative buried there contact THPO (715 588-2139
to add names to the list. {taken from an article by THPO in the Lac du
Flambeau News, Jan 2004, Vol II No. 1, page 19}
Mismanagement of Cemeteries Outrage Tribe by Abbey Thompson.
A 10 month investigation into the past management of the Memorial and
Presbyterian Church Cemeteries on the Lac du Flambeau (Ojibwe) reservation
is revealing in detail the reckless handling of remains of over 300 ancestors
and relatives of Lac du Flambeau tribal members and residents. In 1959 the
cemetery by St. Anthony's Catholic Church expanded their parking lot and
300 bodies were moved to what is now Memorial Cemetery. There is now
controversy concerning records, over crowding and markers being moved.
At the Presbyterian Cemetery there are 241 burials listed on a 1976 plot map.
Only 30 markers remain today and the 1970 parking lot expansion may have covered
several of the graves.
