Waupaca County Asylum - Weyauwega, WI

Physician’s Report

Transcribed by Jean Spiegelberg July 2004

I herewith present my report of the medical, surgical and hygienic condition of the asylum for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1921.

Nothing unusual has happened during the year in the way of sickness. There has been no epidemic and the general health has been fully up to the average. When sickness has occurred the patient has been given the best care possible and in this respect the management has had the co-operation of the attendants.

The surgery has been practically nothing except in the case of one patient in a fit of extreme melancholia who jumped from an upper story window with suicidal intent receiving injuries from which he died a few hours later.

The sanitary conditions have been under the ever watchful eye of the superintendent and matron and are in excellent shape. Good water supply; an efficient sewerage system; carefully prepared food; clean rooms; clean beds; clean clothing, and clean patients so far as it is possible to have them. Well heated and ventilated.

From a psychological standpoint the patients are humanely treated and made to feel that those in charge have a personal interest in them. Diversified employment is found for them to alternate with rest, recreation and amusement. No effort is spared to make this institution what it should be…a real home for the afflicted.

The mortality list for the year is as follows:

Name Age Cause of Death
John Hansen 75 Uremic coma
Louis Halverson 43 Exhaustion of dementia
Catherine Reinke 58 Diabetic gangrene
Vincent Nilalah 27 Pneumonia
Hans Wohlberg 55 Tubercular meningitis
William Sindon 62 Suicide
Martin Fell 76 Nephritis
David McHale 53 Ascites
Henry Lamphear 60 Sudden heart failure

In closing I wish to express my gratitude for the co-operation which I have at all times received in the discharge of my duties

Respectfully submitted,
E. H. JONES
