Osborne Charles 'Charlie' Olson

Charles "Charlie" Olson, 94, Iola, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Iola Living Assistance in Iola.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church in Iola, with the Rev. Dan Somers officiating. Interment will be in Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery in the town of Iola in Waupaca County.

Visitation will be at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the service.

Mr. Olson was born May 30, 1915, in the town of Iola, a son of the late Oscar C. and Josephine (Dobbe) Olson.

He was married to Clara A. Budsberg on Dec. 18, 1943, in Rosholt. She died on Jan. 5, 2008.

He operated a dairy farm in the town of Iola in Waupaca County for most of his life.

He was a member of Hitterdahl Lutheran Church in Iola, where he served on the church council and cemetery association and as a member of Lutheran Brotherhood.

He was a committeeman for the Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative. Charles worked as a volunteer for the Iola Car Show for many years, and he and his wife also volunteered their time delivering "Meals on Wheels" in Iola.

He is survived by one son, Steve (Mary), Appleton; one daughter, Jane (Eric) Hanson, Appleton; one sister, Ruth (Harold) Buchholz, Iola; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by twin brothers, William and Willard; his twin, Leonard; and one grandson.

Arvada G. Rasmussen

Arvada G. Rasmussen, 91, Iola, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church in Iola, with the Rev. Daniel Somers officiating. Burial will be in the Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the services.

Mrs. Rasmussen was born Aug. 13, 1917, in the town of Iola, a daughter of the late Morgan and Inga (Dahlen) Torbenson.

She was married to Dale E. Rasmussen on June 14, 1947, at the Hitterdahl Parsonage. He died May 22, 1966.

She operated Rasmussen's Apparel in Iola until 1957. She was then employed by the Iola-Scandinavia School District as the high school secretary and later as the district bookkeeper, working 23 years for the school district.

She was a Sunday School teacher at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church, church treasurer for 32 years, a member of the church choir, president of the ladies' aid, and a member of the Mission Circle and Lydia Circle.

She also was a member of the Sons of Norway.

Survivors include one son, Jim (Barbara), Iola; one daughter, Mary Rasmussen, Iola; one sister, Myrtle Hopkins, Iola; and one grandson.

Lorraine M. Erickson

Lorraine M. Erickson, 78, Iola, died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the Iola Living Assistance in Iola.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Iola, with the Rev. Dennis Olson officiating. Burial will be in the Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery in Iola.

Visitation will be at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. A Barbara Rebekah Lodge 9 service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Mrs. Erickson was born May 27, 1931, near Clintonville, a daughter of the late Rinard and Cora (Austreng) Krause.

She was married to Harold Nellis. He died in 1958.

She was married to Leo Erickson on Dec. 2, 1961, at the Hitterdahl Lutheran Church in Iola.

After settling in Iola with her husband Leo, she stayed at home and raised their two sons.

She was active in her church and the community. In 2007 she was named the Iola-Scandinavia Outstanding Citizen.

She was a member of the Barbara Rebekah Lodge 9 in Stevens Point.

Survivors include her husband, Leo, Iola; two sons, Lonny, Sarona, and Larry, Iola; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sam Dahlen, 86, Iola, died early Sunday at Iola Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hitterdal Lutheran Church. The Rev. Paul Ronning will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola.

Mr. Dahlen was born Feb. 14, 1891, in Hitterdahl, Norway, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Torgrim Dahlen. He came to the United States with his family at age three and settled in the Town of Iola. He farmed until 1963, when he retired and moved to the Village of Iola.

He married Ella Torbenson on July 9, 1913, at Hitterdal Church.

Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Mrs. Morgan (Inga) Torbenson and Mrs. Anna Fiane, Iola; one grandchild, three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. One son and one sister preceded him in death.

Jerry R. Barger
 
Jerry R. Barger, Route 1, Iola, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield Wednesday after suffering a heart attack earlier in the day at home.

He was 43.

Mr. Barger was a temperature control system technician for the Johnson Control Co. He was also assessor of the Town of Harrison, Waupaca County, and a member of the executive board of the Waupaca County Republican Party.

Funeral services will be held at the Hitterdal Lutheran Church at 1:30 pm Saturday, with the Rev Paul Ronning officiating, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Graveside rites will be conducted by Sheveland-Taylor Post 14. American Legion, Iola.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola, after 3 p.m. Friday. Mr Barger was born Nov. 3, 1933, in Milan, Tenn., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Barger. He grew up in Tennessee, later lived in Chicago and came to Wisconsin 11 years ago.

He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1955.

On Sept. 6. 1958, he was married in North Riverside, Ill. to Patricia Slabenak.

Surviving are his wife: two sons, David and Mark, at home, his mother, Velma Barger, Chicago: a brother, Rex, Spooner: and two sisters, Bobbie Barger, Chicago, and Mrs. Clovis (Sandra) Wilbanks, Berwryn, Ill.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1 30 a! the Hitterdal Lutheran Church for Mrs. Anna Thoe, 84, Route 2, Iola who died Friday at Riverside Community Hospital Waupaca.

The Rev Paul Ronning will officiate and burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home Iola after 3 pm Sunday.

Mrs. Thoe was born Dec. 6, 1893 in the town of Iola, and spent all her life there. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Halvor Loken.

She married John Thoe April 7, 1915 at the Hitterdal Lutheran Church. He died in 1951.

Surviving are two sons Lloyd and Dr. Edmund Iola, four grandchildren six great grandchildren, three brothers, Elvin, Helmer and Ted Loken Iola and two sisters, Mrs. Alma Nelson, Oshkosh, and Mrs. Ella Thompson Iola.

Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

Clara A. Olson, 88, Iola, a town of New Hope native, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008, at Iola Living Assistance.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church in the town of Iola in Waupaca County, with the Rev. Daniel Somers officiating. Burial will be held at Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery in the town of Iola in Waupaca County.

Mrs. Olson was born Feb. 5, 1919, in the town of New Hope in Portage County, a daughter of the late Oscar H. and Anna (Amundson) Budsberg.
 
She was married to Charles Olson on Dec. 18, 1943, at her parent's home in Rosholt.
 
She and her husband operated a dairy farm.
 
She worked at the Zwicker Knitting Mill in Appleton and later worked as a nurse's aid at the Iola Hospital and Iola Nursing Home.
 
She had been a member of the ALCW (American Lutheran Church Women) Mission Circle and Esther Circle at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church.
 
Survivors include her husband, Iola; one daughter, Jane (Eric) Hanson, Appleton; one son, Steven C. (Mary), Appleton; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
 
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Norman, Willie and Palmer Budsberg; three sisters, Olga Langdok, Luella Freude and Mabel Halverson; and one grandson.

Adolph T. Torbenson, 97, was found dead Monday morning in his room at the Iola Hotel.

He was a lifelong resident of the Iola area.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hitterdal Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Ronning officiating and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call now at the Voie Funeral home, Iola.

Mr. Torbenson was born Oct. 27, 1877, in the Town of Iola. a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Torbenson.

He was a retired farmer.

Mr. Torbenson, who was single, is survived by a brother and a sister, Morgan Torbenson and Mrs. Sam (Ella) Dahlen, both of Iola.

Mrs. Frederick Selmer (Katharine Torbenson)

Mrs. Katharine Selmer, a resident of the Scandinavia vicinity most of her life, died Thursday at her home.

Mrs. Selmer was born in Sangavaar, Norway, on March 10. 1846. She was the daughter of Torben and Marie Torbenson. She came to this country with her parents in 1854 and located on a farm in the town of Helvetia, Waupaca county. Her marriage to Frederic Selmer took place in 1870. Mr. Selmer died on September 23, 1899.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clara Kolden of the town of Iola: four sons. Anton of the town of Harrison, Waupaca county, Fred and Morgan, residing on the homestead, and William, residing at Rosholt. A
daughter, Mrs. Marie Thoe, passed away on January 2, 1936, and a son, Otto, died at the age of seven. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Selmer was a, member of the Hitterdahl congregation from the time of its organization until her death was also a charter member of its Ladies' Aid society.

Mrs. Bertha Selmer

Mrs. Bertha Selmer, Town of Harrison (Waupaca County), died at 2:30 pm. Friday at the Harris Nursing Home at Waupaca.

The body is at the Voie Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2 p m. Tuesday. On Wednesday at noon, the body may be viewed at the Hitterdal Lutheran Church, where funeral services will be held that afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Harold Naig officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery. Mrs. Selmer, the former Bertha Gutho, was born in the Town of Iola (Waupaca County) on Feb. 17, 1873. daughter of Mr and Mrs Tobias Gutho. She lived in the Iola area all of her life

She was married on June 3, 1898, to Anton Selmer at the Hitterdal church, and they farmed in that area for many years Mr. Selmer died several years ago.

Mrs Selmer is survived by two sons, Theodore and William Selmer both of the Town of Harrison, and by six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Luther A. Leer

Luther A. Leer, 91, of Iola died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004, at Iola Nursing Home.
 
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery.
Voie Funeral Home of Iola is in charge of arrangements.
 
He was born May 25, 1913, in the town of Iola to the late Edward and Mary (Olson) Leer.
 
Luther was married to Vernice Helgeson on March 25, 1950, at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church. She died May 21, 1978.
 
He had been a dairy farmer most of his life.
 
Survivors include one daughter, Lynette (Robert Both) Leer of Waupaca; one son, Leland Leer of Necedah; one stepdaughter, Gloria (Don) Greenwood of Manchester, Mo.; one sister, Grace Stewart of Raleigh, N.C.; and five stepgrandchildren.

Cordella Aasen

CordelIa "Toby" Aasen, Iola, WI, age 81, died April 15, 2004 at St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.  She was born July 2, 1922 in the town of Wyoming, daughter of the late Herman and Louise (Splittgerber) Schmidt.  She was united in marriage to Milton I. Aasen on June 6, 1942 in Big Falls.  He died on April 3, 1995.  CordelIa had worked as a physician's assistant and lab technician in Chicago area clinics.  She worked with her husband at the Iola Dairy and later as a loan secretary at the First National Bank in Iola.  During WWII she was a "Rosie the Riveter" as she worked for Boeing on B-17’s and B-29's.  She loved scrabble, skiing, shopping, her collection of mice, and flying with Milton.  She enjoyed her PT Cruiser, her computer, and her grandchildren were very important to her.  She had been a member of the Hitterdahl WELCA, Sons of Norway Norskeland 5-580 and the American Legion Auxiliary Sheveland-Taylor Post 14.  Survivors include two sons; Don (Chris) Aasen, Iola, Terry (Liz) Aasen Glen Ellyn, IL, one daughter-in-law; Marianna Aasen, Lisle, IL, her dog, Sidney, two sisters-in-law; Anita (Everett) Peterson, Amherst Junction, Millie Conrad, Eureka, CA, seven grandchildren; Michelle (Charlie) Wyatt, Megan (Mark) Beske, Monica, Eric; Amanda, Kjersti, and Scotty Aasen, seven-great grandchildren; Danielle, Billy, and Beth Wyatt, Taylor and Kyle Beske, Michael and Jessica Schaefer, two step-grandchildren; Trisha (Randy) Coughlin and Jerry Artos, two step-great grandchildren; Randy, Jr. and Sarah Coughlin.  She was preceded in death by a son, Greg, and three sisters; Verna Much, Mildred Klotzbuecher, and Doris Brockhaus.  Funeral services were held Monday, April 19, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hitterdahl Lutheran Church.  The Rev. Daniel Somers officiated.  Burial was in the Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery.  Voie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Milton I. Aasen

Milton I. Aasen, age 77, died Monday, April 3, 1995 at his home.     He was born June 16, 1917 in the Town of Iola, so of the late Johnnie and Cora (Thoe) Aasen.  He married Cordella “Toby” Schmidt on June 6, 1942 in Big Falls, she survives.  He was a former under-sheriff of Waupaca County and for 29 years a special investigator for the Soo Line Railroad until retirement in 1982.  He was a member and past president of the Nordic United States Ski Officials Association and ski jumping judge for the past 47 years.  He participated in the 1980 Olympics at Lake Placid, New York as a ski jumping security official.  He was a member and past president of the Iola Winter Sports Club, a member and past commander of the American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 of Iola.  Charter member of the Iola Lions Club, Director of Central County Airport and one of the founders of the airport, charter member of the Sons of Norway, Norskeland Lodge #5-580 of Iola.  Director of the Iola Old Car Show Board, member of the Waupaca County Board and served on the following committees: Highway Committee, University Agricultural and Extension Committee, Park and Recreation Committee, Human Service Commission on Aging, Human Service Commission on Transportation, and the Criminal Justice Committee.  He was the Town Chairman of the Town of Iola, former chairman of the Rural Fire Association, former chairman of the Iola Ambulance Association.  He was member and past president of the Hitterdahl Lutheran Church and was named the Iola Person of the Year in 1994.  He served in the Army Air Corps in WWII with the 4th Air Force.  He enjoyed skiing and flying.  He is survived by his wife; three sons: Terry (Elizabeth) Aasen, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Greg (Marianna) Aasen, Lombard, Illinois, Don (Chris) Aasen, Iola; a brother, Clifford (Valeda) Aasen, Iola; two sisters: Mildred Conrad, Eureka, California, Anita (Everett) Peterson, Amherst Junction; a sister-in-law: Beverly Aasen, Iola; five grandchildren: Eric Aasen, Grand Forks, North Dakota, Michelle (Charles) Wyatt, Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Megan (Mark) Beske, Bloomingdale, Illinois, Monica Aasen, Winfield, Illinois, Amanda Aasen, Iola.  He was preceded in death by three brothers: Allen, Orin and Russell Aasen and a sister Jeanette Aasen.  Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 1995 at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church with Rev. Gerald Holz officiating.  Burial was the Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery.  Voie Funeral Home of Iola assisted the family with arrangements.

Greg M. Aasen

Greg M. Aasen, 46, Lombard. Ill., formerly of Iola, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 1996, at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Illinois.  He was born Dec. 4, 1949, in Iola, the son of Cordella "Toby" (Schmidt) and the late Milton Aasen.  On Oct. 9, 1994, he married Marianna Bruce.  She survives.  He was baptized on Jan. 8, 1950, at the Hitterdahl Lutheran Church, Iola, and confirmed April 7, 1963, at Northlake Lutheran Church.  He was active in ski jumping in his youth as a member of USSA.  He attended Blackhawk Junior High School and graduated from Fenton High School, Bensonville, Ill, in 1968.  An area general foreman for Meade Electric, Westmont, Ill, he was a member of Local No. 701 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Lisle, Ill.  He also was a member of the Midwestern Council Racing Association and had been very active in closed track road racing, including formula racing.  He had lived in Glen Ellyn, Villa Park, and Winfield, Ill.  Survivors include his wife, Marianna; his mother: Cordella "Toby" Aasen, Iola; three daughters: Michelle Charles) Wyatt, Glen Ellyn, Ill., Megan (Mark) Beske, Ogdensburg, and Monica Aasen, Lombard, Ill.; one stepdaughter: Patricia Artos, Lombard, Ill.; one stepson: Gerald Artos, Lombard, Ill.; and two brothers: Terry (Liz) Aasen, Glen Ellyn, Ill. and Donald (Chris) Aasen, Iola.  He was preceded in death by his father, Milton I. Aasen.  Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church, Iola, with Rev. James Ilten, Lombard, Ill. and Rev. Daniel Somers officiating.  Burial followed in the church cemetery.  Voie Funeral Home, Iola, was in charge of arrangements.

Oliver Mork, 84, Iola, died' Wednesday morning at Iola Hospital, following a short illness,

Mr. Mork was born June 15, 1890, in the Town of Iola, Waupaca County. He married Mabel Reierson on June 6, 1912, in Scandinavia. He farmed until moving to Iola about 31 years ago.

Survivors include his wife: three sons, Earl, Neenah, Elroy, Iola, and Lyle,
Quincy, Ill.; four daughters, Mrs. Harry (Gladys) Mortenson, Marion, and Mrs. Leonard (Vivian) Krueger. Mrs. Ray (Mauritta) Pezewski and Mrs. Al (Dorothy) Daetz, all of Iola; three brothers, Harry and Martin, both of Scandinavia, and Edwin, Iola: seven sisters, Mrs. Annie Erickson and Mrs. Melvin (Alice) Wennesberg. both of Iola, Mrs. Selma Erickson and Mrs. Eilert (Edna) Aasen, both of Scandinavia, Mrs. Johnny (Mabel) Lee, Weyauwega, Mrs. Stella Borge, Amherst, and Mrs. Evelyn Clementson, Chicago, Ill.: 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Two children preceded him in death.

Leah R. Strand, 94, of Iola died Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Iola Living Assistance.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Hitterdahl Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. Voie Funeral Home of Iola is in charge of arrangements.

She was born July 10, 1910, in the town of Helvetia to the late Severin 0. and Gustina (Kittleson) Bestul.

Leah was married to Alton Strand on June 24, 1930, in Iola. He died on June 3, 1998.

She had worked as a teller at First State Bank in Iola.

Survivors include two sons, Eugene (Rae) Strand of Loveland, Ohio, and Douglas (Sharon) Strand of Neenah; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchild.

Mrs. Hans Moen, 90, a lifelong resident of the Iola area, died at 8:30 p. m. Tuesday at Iola Hospital, following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 1 30 p. m. Saturday at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church. The Rev Paul Ronning will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola. The former Mary Nelson was born March 21, 1885, in the Town of Iola, Waupaca County She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hans Nelson. She married Hans Moen on Feb. 8, 1905, at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church Her husband died in 1942.

Survivors include five sons, Melvin, Arnold, Harold and Norman, all of Iola, and Leonard, Oshkosh, one sister, Mrs. Nannie Solberg, Waupaca, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

One son, one daughter, a sister and a brother preceded her in death.

Elmer Torbenson

Elmer Torbenson, Iola, died Monday morning at his home after an illness of about six months. He would have been 70 years of age on Saturday. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Hitterdal Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Harold Naig officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home at Iola from 2 p.m. on. Friday until noon on Saturday, when the body will be taken to the church.

Mr. Torbenson was born in the Town of Iola (Waupaca County) on Nov. 19, 190, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Torbenson. On Nov. 11, 1915, he married Clara Olson of the Town of Iola at the Hitterdal church and they farmed for many years in the Iola area. They moved to the village 16 years ago.

He if survived by his widow: one son. Allen. Amherst Junction: two grandchildren: three brothers, Adolph and Morgan, of the Town of Iola, and Martin, of Racine, and one sister, Mrs. Sam Dahlen, of the Town of  Iola.
