Leonard
M. Karch
Leonard M. Karch, 92, Rosholt, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013, at his home.
A service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shuda Funeral Chapel in
Stevens Point. Burial with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m.
Monday at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon Sunday until the
service.

Mr. Karch was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Arnott, a son of the late Joseph
and Mary (Smaglik) Karch. He attended Arnott schools and began working
for his father at JJ Karch Dry Goods Store and later at the Arnott
Creamery.
He was married to Mildred Gibbs on May 8, 1943, in Plover. They later
divorced.
He entered the U.S. Army on June 26, 1944, and served in Italy during
World War II. He was honorably discharged on June 20, 1946, and returned
to the area. He began his career at Preway where he worked as a line
supervisor until his retirement in 1983.
He was married to Mary Newby on March 3, 1978, in Stevens Point. She
died in 2012.
They later moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., where they resided until her
death.
Survivors include by four daughters, Kay (Fred) Molski, Wisconsin
Rapids; Barb (Fred) Sankey, Plover, Lorraine (Harry) Glisczinski,
Amherst Junction, and Debra (Jeff) Werachowski, Custer; one son, Robert
(Cheri), Rosholt; one sister, Angeline Roszak; four stepchildren, Sherry
(Ron) Peters, Mosinee, Jim (Patti) Newby, Plover, Cindy (Steve) Carr,
Amherst Junction, and Paula (Jason) Wanta, Arnott; 28 grandchildren, 29
great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, five brothers and two
stepgrandchildren.

A. Penne
Michael A. Penne, 85, a resident at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King,
formerly of the town of Buena Vista, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, at
Riverside Hospital in Waupaca.
Visitation will be held at Boston Funeral Home in Stevens Point from 5
to 7 p.m. Monday. Interment will be in Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in
King at a later date.

Mr. Penne was born May 14, 1927, in Waterloo, Iowa, a son of the late
Joseph and Alberta (Odgen) Penne. He grew up in the Chicago area in
Illinois. He attended local schools before going to a trade school to
become a plumber.
He was inducted into the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged.
He worked as a union plumber for 45 years at various mills in the area.
He was a past member of the Shriners and Masons.
Survivors include one daughter, Pat Penne-Hampel, Plover; one brother;
three sisters; and two grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara McConnell; and
his siblings.

Bernas
John A. Bernas, 62, Plover, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at his home.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus
Catholic Church in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Tom Lindner officiating.
Burial will be in the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the
services.
A memorial in his name will be established at a later date.

Mr. Bernas was born April 4, 1950, in Stevens Point, a son of Edward and
Genevieve (Walczak) Bernas.
He served in the Army National Guard 32nd Division 120th Field Artillery
for 25 years, retiring as a master sergeant.
He was employed by Ed Bernas Heating as a sheet metal journeyman for
more than 40 years.
He was a member of the 32nd Division Association.
Survivors include his parents, Stevens Point; three brothers, Tom
(Stephanie), Plover, and Jim (Cindy) and Bob (Carol), both of Stevens
Point; and one sister, Donna (Dave) Suchon, Stevens Point.

Kubowski
Alois Kubowski, 80, a Portage County native, died Tuesday, June 19,
2012.
There will be no service. His ashes will be interned in King Veterans
Cemetery in King.
Mr. Kubowski was born Feb. 9, 1932, in Portage County, a son of the late
August and Rose Kubowski.
He served in the U.S. Army in 1954 during the Korean War.
He was married to Christine Niemczyk on Sept. 17, 1955.
He started his own business in welding and salvage in 1965 and ran the
business until he retired.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Donna, Oklahoma City, Okla.;
and one son, David, Hinton, Okla.

Louis Helminiak, 81, 3257 Orchid Lane, Stevens Point, died Tuesday,
April 3, 2007, at his home.

Louis "Louie" Helminiak, 81, Stevens Point, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007,
at his home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in
Stevens Point with the Rev. Al Jakubowski officiating. A private burial
will take place at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King at a later date.

Mr. Helminiak was born May 1, 1925, in Stevens Point, a son of the late
Casimir and Mary (Przybylski) Helminiak. He grew up in Stevens Point and
graduated from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1942.
He served in the United States Navy. He entered the service on July 26,
1943, in Milwaukee. He served as a storekeeper third class and earned the
Victory Ribbon, American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, with
one Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946, at Great
Lakes, Ill.
He returned to Stevens Point and worked for the Soo Line Railroad,
retiring after 40 years. He said he was known for "switching rail cars
faster than anyone else in Stevens Point."
He was married to El Jane Mrozinski 57 years ago.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Mark; three daughters, Marilyn,
Marlene (Alan) and Marian; and one sister, Leone Koss.

El Jane M. "Janie" Helminiak, 84, Stevens Point, died Sunday, May 27,
2012, at her home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Shuda Funeral
Chapel in Stevens Point, with Dwaine Habrat officiating. Burial will be
in Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King at a later date.
Visitation will be at the funeral chapel from 9 a.m. Thursday until the
service.

Mrs. Helminiak was born April 25, 1928, in Stevens Point, a daughter of
the late Alois "Lloyd" and Regina "Jean" Mrozinski. She graduated from
P.J. Jacobs High School in 1945.
She was married to Louie Helminiak on Oct. 1, 1947, in Stevens Point. He
preceded her in death.
She worked for Sentry Insurance for 40 years, retiring in 1987.
Survivors include four children, Marilyn, Marlene (Alan Brause), Mark
and Marian; one sister, Mary Ann Fritschler; and one brother, Greg
Mrozinski.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond, Gerald and
George; and one sister, Leone Marshall.

Barnes
Robert S. Barnes, 74, Rosholt, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at St.
Michael's Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Shuda Funeral
Chapel in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Bill Carlson officiating. Burial
with full military honors will be at the Veterans Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday and
again from 10 a.m. Friday until the services. The Rosholt American
Legion Post 509 will combine with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 568 and
Disabled American Veterans Post 10262 for a ritual at 6:30 p.m. Thursday
at the funeral chapel.
A memorial in lieu of flowers will be established in his name for the
Humane Society of Portage County, 3200 Iber Lane, Plover, WI 54467.

Mr. Barnes was born Feb. 13, 1934, in Phillipsburg, Pa., a son of the
late Samuel and Olive (Cullin) Barnes. As a child, he moved with his
family to Canton, Ohio, where he graduated from high school.
He entered the United States Air Force on April 28, 1950, and later
served in the U.S. Army. He retired as a construction mechanic 1 from
the U.S. Navy on Nov. 18, 1974, at Great Lakes, Ill. During his career
in the armed services, he earned many medals, including the National
Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United
Nations Medal, Occupational Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and
Vietnam Campaign Medal. He also earned the Combat Action Ribbon and the
Civic Action Unit Award. An American flag is being flown in his memory
by the U.S. Navy Seabees at Camp Moreell, Kuwait.
He was married to Martha Jurczynski on May 25, 1974, in Glenview, Ill.
After earning his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he worked as a
district service manager for Ryder Truck Services and the Glenview
Country Club until his retirement in 1995.
He and his wife moved to the Rosholt area in 1995.
He was a member of Rosholt American Legion Post 509, Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 568 and Disabled American Veterans Post 10262.
Survivors include his wife; his five children, Roberta (Lonnie) Shelton,
Jayne (Gary) Clay, Charles (Lauren) Barnes, Robert (Susie) Barnes Jr.,
and Stephen (Angie) Barnes, all of Gulfport, Miss.; nine grandchildren;
and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Barnes was born and raised in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of the late

She was married to Robert S. Barnes. He preceded her in death.

Clay, both of Gulfport, Miss.; three sons, Chuck (Lauren), Bob (Susie)
and Steve (Angie), all of Gulfport, Miss.; two sisters, Dorothy Meyers,
Chicago, Ill., and Marcyanna Williams, Kansas City, Mo.; and
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Harriet March; two
brothers, Joseph Jurczynski and Henry Jurczynski; and one son-in-law,

Frank B. Podach, 62, a resident at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King,
formerly of Stevens Point, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 2, at the Main
Chapel of the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King. Burial will be in
Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be at the chapel from 10:30 a.m. Friday until the
service.

Mr. Podach was born May 21, 1949, in Stevens Point, a son of the late

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.

Berry, Deerfield, and Marilyn (Michael) Weisbrod and Patricia (Richard)
Nagorski, both of Stevens Point; and three brothers, Ed (Sandy),
Bellville, and Thomas and Robert, both of Stevens Point. He was also
preceded in death by one sister, Janice Podach.

Mayford L. "Mike" Rice, 81, Amherst, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at
Ministry St. Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2011, at
Maple Crest Funeral Home in Waupaca. Burial of cremains will be in the
Central Wisconsin Veteran's Memorial Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 6 p.m. Friday.
The family has established a memorial fund for Ministry Hospice in his
name.

Mr. Rice was born Oct. 11, 1929, in the town of Royalton, a son of the
late Howard and Alice (Ravey) Rice.
He was a Marine, serving his country from Nov. 27, 1951, to Nov. 5,
1953.
For 35 years, he was a mechanic, working for Steibs in Waupaca and
Cooper Auto in Stevens Point. He had also been a certified nursing
assistant for 12 years at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.
Survivors include his wife, Marion; two daughters, Michelle Law,
Amherst, and Mary Jo (special friend, Jim Anderson) Schroth, Plover;
four sons, Mickey (Nancy), Mark (Brenda) and Mike (Rhonda), all of
Waupaca, and Matt (Sandy), Weyauwega; two former wives, Joanne Rice and
Ardyce Schroeder, both of Waupaca; one brother, Donald, Phoenix, Ariz.;
15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Melvin; and one grandson,
Jay Bradley Rice.

Ronald Leigh Pankow, 66, Waupaca, formerly of Stevens Point, died
Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Shepherd of the
Lakes Church in Waupaca, with Pastor Dean Wheeler officiating. Burial
will be in the spring in the Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in
King.
Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the
services.

Mr. Pankow was born Nov. 8, 1944, in Decorah, Iowa, a son of the late
Raymond and Wilma (Weflen) Pankow.
He entered the U.S. Air Force on Feb. 10, 1964, serving as an airman
first class. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Air Force
Good Conduct Medal and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He was
honorably discharged on Aug. 31, 1967.
He attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, graduating in 1971
with a degree in accounting.
He was married to Trudy Prell on Aug. 17, 1968, in Waupaca.
Mr. Pankow was a public accountant, working for Elmer Timm, Timm Schmidt
and Co. and Clifton Gunderson LLP, retiring in 2002. He currently owned
Pankow Tax and Accounting.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Scott and Curt (April Wistrom),
both of Waupaca; and Jeff (Beth), Clinton, Mo.; one sister, Linda
(Keith) Johnson, Decorah, Iowa; and four grandchildren.

Timothy J. Turner, 52, (town of Belmont) Almond, died Tuesday, June 11,
2002, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St.
Patrick Church in the town of Lanark of St. Maximilian Parish, with the
Rev. Daniel Farley officiating. Burial will be in the Wisconsin Veterans
Memorial Cemetery at King.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Holly Funeral Home in
Waupaca, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established for the Tim Turner Scholarship Fund at
Almond-Bancroft High School.
Mr. Turner was born Feb. 26, 1950, in Waukesha, a son of Claire J. and
Marjorie (Hartsworm) Turner.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
He was married to Karen Pionkowski on April 16, 1983, in Amherst.
He was the owner and operator of Turner Services in Weyauwega.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Beth, Almond; one son, Kyle,
Almond, his parents, Waupaca; and one brother, Ronald C. (Mary),
Mukwonago.

Marian H. Olski
Marian H. Olski, 83, Stevens Point, died Monday, April 20, 2009, at her
home while under the care of Ministry Home Care-Hospice Services.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Shuda
Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point, with the Rev. Al Burkhardt officiating.
Burial will be at a later date at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
Visitation will be at the funeral chapel from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the
services. The Women of the Moose Lodge 311 will hold a ritual at the
funeral chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Mrs. Olski was born Oct. 10, 1925, in Wyoming, a daughter of the late
Walter and Inez (Bird) Portwood. As a child she moved with her family to
the state of Washington where she attended school.
She entered the United States Navy on June 17, 1944, in Spokane, Wash. She
served as a seaman second class and received an honorable discharge on
April 11, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She was married to Leonard "Blackie" Olski of the U.S. Marines on Jan. 27,
1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
They resided in the state of Washington until 1950 when they moved to the
Stevens Point area where he is originally from.
The couple owned and operated the Congress Club for many years and, after
turning the business over to their daughter, Monica, and her husband, Joe,
she was the head cook for 12 years at the Moose Family Lodge until
retiring in 2002.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Barbara (David) Zagrzebski,
Mosinee, and Monica Neuberger, Stevens Point; family member, Joe
Neuberger, Custer; one brother, Jack (Bonnie) Harpham, Klameth Falls,
Ore.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one infant son and one brother.

Ganther
Floyd E. Ganther, 60, Mosinee, died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his home.
Friends and family will celebrate his life from 10 a.m. to noon Friday
at the Shuda Funeral Chapel in Stevens Point. Burial will be in Veterans
Cemetery in King.

Mr. Ganther was born March 15, l949, in Mauston, a son of the late
Richard Floyd and Josephine Victoria (Leszczynski) Ganther. He graduated
from Necedah High School.
He entered the U.S. Army on July 4, 1969, at Fort Campbell, Ky. He was
discharged on Jan. 11, 1972, at Fort Riley, Kansas. He received the
National Defense Medal and was a rifle marksman. He served in Portugal
during the Vietnam War. He then served in the Army Reserves until June
26, 1975.
After service he worked for the Department of Natural Resources in fire
control until coming to Stevens Point in 1979. He was a letter carrier
for the post office until his retirement due to ill health in 2005.
He was a member of the National Letter Carriers Local 381.
He was married to Vicki Marie Simonis on July 3, 2004, in Wausau.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Craig Ganther, Wausau, and Albert
(Victoria) Simonis, Mosinee; one daughter, Ronda (Bradley) Stieber,
Wausau; one sister, JoAnn Ganther, Necedah; one brother, Charles (Nancy)
Ganther, Necedah; and four grandchildren.

Kenneth G. Patton, 79, King, father of five Portage County residents,
died Friday, May 15, 2009, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Main Chapel at
the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, with the Rev. Paul Vanden Hogen
officiating. Interment will be in Central Wisconsin Veterans Memorial
Cemetery in the town of Farmington in Waupaca County.

Mr. Patton was born April 25, 1930, in Mosinee, a son of the late Earl
and Nora (Beyer) Patton.
He served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War.

Jeff (Sherri), Tony (Carly) and Chris, all of Stevens Point, and Mike
(Kelly), Plover; two daughters, Theresa (John) Carponter, Plover, and

Patton, Mosinee, and Charlene (Chuck) Sitas, New Lisbon; 16
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his former spouse, Colette
Marx, Plover.

'Blackie' Olski
Leonard "Blackie" Olski, 88, 3236 Mary St., Stevens Point, the former
longtime owner of the Congress Club in Stevens Point, died Wednesday,
July 14, 2010, at Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wausau.
Private family services will be held, and burial with full military
honors will be held at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in King.
Shuda Funeral Services & Crematory of Stevens Point and Plover assisted

Mr. Olski was born Jan. 27, 1922, in Stevens Point, a son of the late
Thomas and Frances (Vase) Olski. He attended local schools.
He entered the U.S. Marines on Jan. 6, 1942. He was stationed with USMC
Company K, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines. The Third Battalion was
reassigned to the 2nd Marine Division in 1942, which participated in the
following World War II campaigns: Guadalcanal, Southern Solomons,
Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. Later they were relocated to
Nagasaki, Japan, within weeks after the atomic bomb was dropped on the
city. He participated in the occupation of Japan in September 1945 until
his honorable discharge in 1946. He was decorated with the
Asiatic-Pacific Star Campaign Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation 1 Star,
American Theatre Ribbon, and Naval Unit Company and Japanese
Occupational Ribbon.
He was married to Marian Portwood, herself serving in the U.S. Navy, on
Jan. 27, 1945, in Corpus Christi, Texas. She died on April 20, 2009.
The couple moved to Stevens Point after his Marine tour was complete,
and they owned and operated the Congress Club for 40 years before
turning it over to his daughter, Monica.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (David) Zagrzebski, Mosinee,
and Monica Neuberger, Stevens Point; seven grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Leonard Thomas Olski Jr.
