Olaf S. Swenson

Olaf S. Swenson, 82, Iola businessman and funeral director for many years, died today at 9 a. m. at the Iola hospital. Mr. Swenson had been in ill health for the past 12 years and was a patient at the hospital since June, 1952.

Olaf Severin Swenson was born in Waupaca county on Sept. 28, 1872, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Swenson. He was president of the O. S. Swenson Co., Inc., operators of a furniture business and funeral home at Iola for the past 33 years. Previously the firm operated similar enterprises at Nelsonville and at Scandinavia. Mr Swenson retired some time ago from active participation in business affairs and the store and funeral home has been operated by his adopted son, Robert Moore Swenson. and Selmer Voie.

On Nov. 13. 1895, he married Ida Loberg of Nelsonville, at the Nelsonville Lutheran church. Since 1910 Mr. Swenson has been a member of the National and the Wisconsin Funeral Directors associations.

He is survived by his wife and two adopted children. Robert M. Swenson and Mrs. Orin B. Taylor, both of Iola,

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p. m. at Our Savior's Lutheran church. Rev. E. W. Quam will officiate and burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Swenson funeral home at Iola from 1 p. m. on Monday until 1 p. m. on Tuesday.

Funeral Of Mr. Swenson

Rev. E. W. Quam conducted funeral services Wednesday afternoon at Our Savior's Lutheran church, Iola. for Olaf S. Swenson, president of O. S. Swenson. Inc., furniture business and funeral home in Iola.

Mr. Swenson died Saturday after a long illness.

Following the services. burial took place in the parish cemetery.

Pallbearers were Carl Larson, Perry Swenson, Herbert Guyant, C. E. Nebel, Lewis Loberg and Guy Larson.

"In the Garden." "God Understands" and "Near to the Heart" were sung during the funeral by Mrs. Julius Peterson.

Attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shaw and son, Charles, and George Larson and son, Loren, Milwaukee; Carl Jacobson and Norman Jacobson, Irma; Mr. and Mrs. Trygve Haagenson, Madison; and others from Stevens Point, Amherst, Nelsonville, Waupaca, Clintonville and Scandinavia.

Mrs. Ida Swenson

Mrs. Ida Serena Swenson, 83, Iola, died Friday night at 11:25 at the Iola Hospital. She had been in ill health for three years.

The funeral will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Iola, with the Rev. J. P. Hulterstrum officiating, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Vole Funeral Home in Iola from 1 p. m. Sunday until 1 p. m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Swenson was born in the Town of Nw Hope on Nov. 20, 1873, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lars L. Loberg. She was married at the Nelsonville Lutheran Church on Nov. 30, 1895, to O. S. Swenson, who died several years ago.

She had been an Iola resident for 33 years.

Surviving are a son, Robert M. Swenson, and a daughter, Mrs. Grace Taylor, both of

Iola; a granddaughter; a sister, Mrs. Effie Sorbye, Nelsonville, and two brother, Oscar L. Loberg, Nelsonville, and Almer Loberg, Amherst.

Mrs. Swenson was a member of the Women's Missionary Society of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Dorcas Mission Circle.

Mrs. Inga Doxrude

Mrs. Inga Doxrude, 81, Village of Iola, died Sunday at the Iola Hospital. She had been in failing health the past year.

Mrs. Doxrude was born May 8, 1885, in Stone Bank, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Engebretson. She was raised in the Towns of Scandinavia and St. Lawrence, and on June 5, 1905, she married Carl O. Doxrude at Neenah.

The couple made their home in Nelsonville until 48 years ago, when they moved to Iola. Mr. Doxrude preceded her in death.

Funeral services for Mrs. Doxrude are set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lu-Jieran Church, lola, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Roufs officiating. Burial will take place later in the Nelsonville cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola.

Surviving are one son, Islo, Iola; two daughters, Mrs. Eunice Johnson and Mrs. William (Geneva) Olson, both of Iola; one step-daughter, Mrs. Harrison (Cora) Shaw, Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Harry Johnson, Waupaca, Mrs. Annie Bestul, Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Hilda Gottschalk, Scandinavia; one step-brother, Oliver Olson, Iola; three half-brothers, Norman, Route 1, Scandinavia, Jonas Engebretson, Amherst, and Obert Engebretson, Waupaca; three half-sisters, Mrs. Alida Thompson, Waupaca, Mrs. Lester (Palma) Olson, Route 1, Scandinavia, and Mrs. Morten (Julia) Tackman, Iola; 16 grandchildren and 20 greatgrandchildren.

Mrs. Reuben Johnson 68. Iola, died at 2:20 a.m. today at St. Michael's Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior s Lutheran Church, Iola. The Rev. Henry Lease will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p. m. Tuesday at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola

The former Eunice Doxrude was born Dec. 18, 1905, in Nelsonville, a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Carl 0. Doxrude She married Reuben Johnson in 1936. Her husband died in 1947.

Mrs Johnson spent most of her life working as an elementary school teacher She was retired.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs Joseph (Mary Diane) Genna, Madison, one son, David Johnsoa Route 5. Stevens Point: one brother, Islo Doxrude, Iola, one sister, Mrs. Willard (Geneva) Olson, Iola, one half-sister. Mrs. Harrison (Cora) Shaw, Milwaukee, and five grandchildren

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by one brother and three half-sisters

Oliver M Olson. 81, Route 1, Iola. died Wednesday at New London Community Hospital after an illness of a year and a half.

Mr Olson was a retired farmer and a World War I veteran.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 1 30 p m at Our .Saviors Lutheran Church. Iola, with the Rev Henry A Lease officiating and burial will follow in the church cemetery

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home Iola. after 3pm Friday

Military graveside rites will be conducted by Sheveland-Taylor Post 14, American Legion, Iola.

Mr Olson was born March 15. 1893, in the Town of St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tobias Olson

He was married to Nora Engebretson, who preceded him in death

Surviving are three sons, Emory, Iola, Raymond, Route 1, Iola, and Kenneth, River Falls, a daughter. Mrs Wayne (Helen) Holman. Janesville, two half-brothers, Jonas Engebretson, Amherst, and Obert Engebretson, Waupaca, three half-sisters. Mrs Morton (Julia) Tackman, Iola, Mrs Elida Tessen, Waupaca, and Mrs Lester (Palma) Olson, Iola seven grandchildren; three step-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Larson

Double funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Iola for Mr. and Mrs. Oliver C. Larson, of Iola. Mr. Larson, 78, died Friday at the Iola Hospital, where he and Mrs. Larson had been admitted together on Thursday. Mrs. Larson died there early this morning.

The Rev. Henry A. Lease will officiate at the funeral services and burial rites will be conducted in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. at the Vote Funeral Home at Iola.

Mr. Larson was born at Amherst Junction on May 12, 1896, a son of Mr, and Mrs. George Larson. He married Alice Lee at Rosholt on June 23,1930. They farmed for a time and Mr. Larson was a rural mail carrier at Amherst Junction before they moved to Milwaukee in 1937. They lived there until 1969 and then moved to Iola. Mr. Larson was a retired machinist of the A.O. Smith Corp., Milwaukee.

Mrs. Larson, 75, was born Oct. 12, 1899, in the Town of Alban, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Lee. She had been a school teacher in the Rosholt area many years ago.

The Larsons are survived by two sons, Malcolm Larson, Milwaukee, and Oliver W. Larson, Wisconsin Rapids; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Signe) Putzer, New Berlin, and six grandchildren

Mr Larson is survived by one brother, Enos Larson, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Larson is survived by one sister, Rachel Lee, Lake Forest, Ill.

Lester A. Olson

Lester A. Olson, 77, Iola, died Wednesday afternoon at St. Michael's Hospital after a long illness.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola. The Rev. Henry A, Lease will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery-Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola.

Mr, Olson was born Jan. 19, 1900, in the Town of St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hedwin Olson. He was a lifelong resident and farmer in the Town of St. Lawrence until he moved to Iola in June 1973.

He married Palma Engebretson on Nov. 19,1924, in Waupaca.

Surviving are his wife; one son, Carlyle, Libertyville, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Wilbert (Hildegard) Kielblock. Tigerton, Mrs. Gaylord (Ruth) Lewison, Springfield, Ill., and Mrs. Ruben (Anna) Thore, Scandinavia; 16 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren.

Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Raymond Olson

Raymond Olson, 84, of Iola died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at the Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. He was born Oct. 16, 1921, in the town of Helvetia to the late Oliver and Nora (Engbretson) Olson.
 
He was a dairy farmer in the town of Iola. He is survived by his sister Helen (Wayne) Holman of Janesville and brother Kenneth (LaDonna) Olson of Green Bay.
 
A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2006, at 11 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Iola with burial in the church's cemetery. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service at the church. Voie Funeral Home of Iola is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Olga Austin

Mrs. Olga Austin. 79, a resident of the Iola and Scandinavia areas for  many years, died Sunday at 8:45 a.m. at the Bethany Nursing Home in  Waupaca.

She had been a patient there since October.

Born at Scandinavia on Nov. 28, 1882, the daughter of the late Mr. and  Mrs. Ole Wrolstad, she lived in the Iola vicinity after her marriage to  Teman Austin.

Her husband died in 1940.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Inez Butow, Winnetka. III.; three grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren.

A son and a daughter preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola, with the Rev. Kenneth Routs officiating, and burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola, from 3 p.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday, and then at the church.

Gladys B. Sorenson, 89, Iola, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Riverside Medical Center, Waupaca.
 
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola. Burial will be in Our Savior's Lutheran Cmetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Voie Funeral Home, Iola.
 
Gladys was born Jan. 29, 1912, in the town of Harrison, a daughter of the late Harry and Hattie (Buckholtz) Helgeson. She was married to Arling Sorenson on Jan. 17, 1933, in Iola. He died March 30, 1959.
 
She worked in the Iola-Scandinavia Schools for more than 25 years as head cook.

Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Gunderson, Iola; three sons, Dennis (Nancy) Sorenson, Iola, James (Linda) Sorenson, Land O'Lakes, and Kenneth (Linda) Sorenson, Iola; five sisters, Bertha Jenson, Waupaca, Inga Grove, Iola, Edna Tschurwald, Iola, Hazel (Mike) Solberg, Waupaca, and Phyllis (Lloyd) Solberg, Milwaukee; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Arthur Lien

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Iola for Arthur Lien, 84, of Iola. The services will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Iola, with the Rev. Henry A. Lease officiating. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Lien died early Saturday morning at the Iola Hospital, where he had been a patient for the previous six days. He had been in failing heath for two years.

The body is at the Voie Funeral Home at Iola, where friends may call after 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Mr. Lien was born on Dec. 2, 1892, in the Town of Wyoming, Waupaca County, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Lien. He moved with his family to Iola in 1900, and in 1916 he started operating a farm on the north edge of the village, and he had lived there since. For 32 years he operated a milk delivery service in the village, in conjunction with his farming operation.

He is survived by his wife, the former Alice Iverson, whom he married on Dec., 30,1919, in the Lutheran parsonage at Wittenberg. He is further survived by a son, Lowell, Iola; a daughter, Phyllis Lien, Appleton; three grandchildren, and a brother, Guy Lien, Iola.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Funeral services set for three Iola teens

Funeral services for three Iola teenagers killed in a one-car accident in Waupaca County early Saturday morning will be held Tuesday and Wednesday.

Services for Scott J. Halverson, 18, will be held Tuesday, while a double service for Steven B. Williams, 18, and Gary D. Lien, 17, win be held Wednesday.

The three were killed about 1 a,m. Saturday when a car they were riding in hit a boulder and burst into flames on Waupaca County Trunk E, less than a mile north of Highway 161, east of Iola.

The Waupaca County Sheriffs Department said Halverson was driving the auto, which was southbound on E when the driver lost control, crossed the centerline and went into the east ditch.

All three were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the Waupaca County Sheriffs Department said.

Funeral services for Halverson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola. The Rev. Henry A. Lease will officiate.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call today at the Voie Funeral Home. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m.

Funeral services for Williams and Lien will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the North New Hope Lutheran Church. The Rev. Emil Dockter will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Voie Funeral Home. Scott Jon Halverson was born March 23,1957, in Iola, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Halverson. He lived in the Iola area all of his life and was currently employed in a potato warehouse by Anthony Farms, Scandinavia.

Survivors include bis parents in Iola; two brothers, Dan and Terry, Iola; one sister, Tina, Iola; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. B.F. LaStofka, Eagle River, and bis paternal grandmother, Mrs. Agnes Halverson, Iola.

Steven Bradley Williams was born Nov. 29, 1956, in Tuscola, Ill., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Williams. He lived most of his life in the Iola area and currently worked as a carpenter.

Survivors include his father, Donald Williams, Leopolis; his mother, Mrs. Kenneth Gunderson, Iola; three brothers, Donald, in Iowa, and Daniel and Kit, Iola; two sisters, Mrs. James (Christine) Jenson and Kathy Williams, both of Iola; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Martin, Iola, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Floyd Williams Sr.,
Iola.

Gary DuWayne Lien was born July 16,1957, in Iola, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Lien. He spent all of his life in the Iola area and was a senior at Iola-Scandinavia High School.

Survivors include his parents, in Iola; four sisters, Mrs. Roger (Patricia) Brandenburger, Randolph, Mrs. John (Sandra) Carter, Lawrenceburg, Ky., Mrs. Jerry (Judy) Kaminski, Lake Villa, Ill., and Rachelle Lien, Iola; his paternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Lien, Iola, and his maternal grandfather, Lawrence Olsen, Iola.

Stevens Point Daily Journal - Stevens Point, Wisconsin - September 7, 1963
Harry O. Hein

Harry O. Hein, 75, Town of Helvetia (Waupaca County), was found dead Friday noon near Campbell Lake on his property.

Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola, with the Rev. Kenneth L. Rouls officiating, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. Mr. Hem was born in Symco July 10, 1888, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hein.

He moved to the Town of Helvetia 11 years ago after retiring as a billing clerk for the Moline Malleable Iron Co.. St. Charles DL His marriage to the former Bertha Carlson took place in St. Charles Aug. 10, 1910.

Mr. Rein's wife died earlier this year. He is survived by a son, Walter, St. Charles; a step-sister. Mrs. Paul Fritz, Manawa, and five grandchildren.
