Hildegard A. Gurholt

Hildegard A. Gurholt, 84, Waupaca, formerly of Iola, sister of an Amherst Junction woman, died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, at the Bethany Home in Waupaca.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church until the services. Voie Funeral Home in Iola is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gurholt was born May 22, 1916, in the town of Scandinavia in Waupaca County, a daughter of the late Albert and Martha (Sodersten) Trinrud.
She was married to Delmar Gurholt on Sept. 14, 1935, in Scandinavia.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Judith (James) Lewis, Milwaukee, and Marjorie (Steve) Morris, Lake Charles, La.; two sons, James, Minneapolis, Minn., and Paul (Marcia) Gurholt, Bismarck, N.D.; three sisters, Eunice Romales, Waupaca, Belva Gurholt, Iola, and Dolores (Ed) Carr, Amherst Junction; 20 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

Otto R. Gurholt


Otto R. Gurholt, 92, Town of Scandinavia, died at his home at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday. He had been in ill health for several months.

The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Gurholt, he was born March 9, 1873, In the Town of Scandinavia. On May 20, 1899, he married the former Ella Zwickey at the old Scandinavia Lutheran Church.

Mr. Gurholt is survived by one son, Sylvan Gurholt, Scandinavia; one daughter, Miss Gladys Gurholt, Scandinavia; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

His parents, wife, one son and brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Eldon Person officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Jonas O. Gurholt


Jonas O. Gurholt, 62, a lifelong resident of the town of Scandinavia Waupaca county died December 7, at his home at Scandinavia. He had been in ill health for 25 years and his death was attributed to a heart attack.

Funeral services were held last Saturday at the Scandinavia Lutheran church. D: O. O. Sovde officiated and burial followed in the Scandinavia Lutheran cemetery.

The pallbearers were Alfred Anderson, Sylvan Gurholt, Morris Chilrud, Ray Knutson, Selmar Anderson and Jonas Dahlen. During the services the church choir sang "Come Ye Disconsolate" “Mv Looks Up to Thee” and “Jesus Loves My Soul”.

Mr. Gurholt was born on July 24, 1875 in the town of Scandinavia. He was the son of Ole and Gunhild Gurholt. He had spent his entire life in Scandinavia. His marriage to Anna Dahlen of Iola took place on September 4, 1907.

Surviving are his wife, four children, Atadale, Ovedia, Carston and Delmar all of the Scandinavia community, a brother Otto Gurholt of Scandinavia, two sisters, Mrs. E. A. Hotz of Scandinavia and Mrs. A. S. Anderson of Amherst, and a grandson James Gurholt.

I. Gurholt

Belva I. Gurholt, 92, Iola, sister of an Amherst Junction woman, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004, at the Iola Nursing Home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church until the services. Voie Funeral Home of Iola is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gurholt was born March 22, 1911, in Scandinavia, a daughter of the late Albert and Martha (Soderstein) Trinrud. She was married to Sylvan Gurholt on Oct. 21, 1933, in Scandinavia. He died Jan. 4, 1998.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one sister, Dolores "Dolly" (Ed) Carr, Amherst Junction.

Thomas R. Thompson

Thomas R. Thompson, 75, Fond du Lac, a town of Amherst native and formerly of Waupaca, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at his residence.

A gathering of friends will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola. Burial will be in the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

Mr. Thompson was born Sept. 2, 1925, in the town of Amherst, a son of the late Arthur and Bernice (Dwinell) Thompson. He was married to Alice Hansen on June 20, 1949, in Milwaukee. She died Oct. 1, 1992.

He served as a corporal during World War II in the Army Air Corps. He worked at the Waupaca County Post and later in housekeeping at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King.

Survivors include two daughters, Corinne (Steve) Priis, Fond du Lac, and Valerie (Norm) Trisler, Waupaca; two sons, Allan, Milwaukee, and David, Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Jean (Donald) Loken, Iola; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sisters and one grandchild

Mrs. Palmer Nelson


Funeral services for Mrs. Palmer Nelson of the Town of Scandinavia will be held at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church at 1:30 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Eldon Person will officiate, and burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola, after 2 p.m. Thursday and at the church after Friday noon.

Mrs. Nelson, 65, died Monday at the Iola Hospital. She h ad been ill six months and was a hospital patient one day.

Born in the Town of Scandinavia Feb. 18, 1898, she was the former Nora Hoyord, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hoyord: On Jan. 1. 1920, she married Roy Zwicky, who died in a logging accident in January 1924. She was married to Mr. Nelson April 11, 1932.

Surviving are her husband; two children by her first marriage, Mrs. Lois Rosholt, Milwaukee, and Alton Zwicky, Ypsilanti, Mich.; two grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Murat, Milwaukee.

Palmer C. Nelson, 73. Route 1. Scandinavia. died Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m Saturday at Scandinavia Lutheran Church. The Rev Paul Ronning will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola. Mr. Nelson was born Feb. 4. 1904, in the Town of Amherst. a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Nelson. He was a farmer and lived most of his life in the Town of Scandinavia.

He married Nora Zwickv on April 11. 1931. in Scandinavia. She died on June 3, 1963

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Mrs. Lois Rosholt, Milwaukee: one stepson. Alton Zwicky, Ypsolanti. Mich.. two brothers, Edwin. Ogdensburg. and Julian, California: and two sisters, Mrs. Effie Ristow, Amherst. and Mrs. Jonas (Luella) Bestul, Santa Maria. Calif.

Adolph J. Hoyord

A lifelong resident of the town of Scandinavia. Waupaca county. Adolph J. Hoyord, 87, died at 1:55 a. m. Monday.

Mr. Hoyord’s death occurred at the home of his son-in-law and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Nelson, with whom he lived in the town of Scandinavia. He had been in ill health several months.

Mr. Hoyord was born in the township on Sept. 6, 1866. a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Hoyord. He was married Nov. 15, 1893, at Scandinavia to the former Resine Bestul. Mrs. Hoyord died in 1949. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Sidney Murat, Milwaukee. and Mrs. Nelson; two sisters, Miss Alice Hoyord and Mrs. Mabel Zwicky, town of Scandinavia; two brothers, Henry and Walter, town of Scandinavia; three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran church, Benson's Corners (town of New Hope). and burial will follow in the Scandinavia cemetery. Friends may call at the Swenson funeral home, Iola, until, noon Thursday, when the body will be taken to the church.

Albert Budsberg

Albert Budsberg, 84, Milwaukee, died Sunday at the Avon Nursing Home, Milwaukee. Mr. Budsberg farmed in the Iola and Scandinavia areas until 1944, when he moved to Milwaukee. Funeral services will be held at l:30p.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola. The Rev. Henry A. Lease will officiate. Burial will follow in the Scandinavia Cemetery. Friends may call today at the Voie Funeral Home.

Mr. Budsberg was born May 22, 1887, in the Town of Iola, a son of the late Ole Budsberg. He married Myrtle Jacobson on Dec. 27, 1911, and she is among survivors.

Other survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Norman (Bernice) Beilfuss, Milwaukee, Mrs. Delbert, (Genevieve) Bude, Milwaukee, Mrs. Otto (Doris)
Hamberger, Milwaukee, Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Honeck, Sussex, and Mrs. Jac (Margaret) Oelhefen, Cedarberg; three Sons, Vernon, Milwaukee,
Delmar, Argyle, and Ray, Iola; one brother, Louie, Hawley, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. Otelie Johnson, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Julia Strebe, Waupaca; 18 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

Myrtle Jacobson-Budsberg


Mrs. Albert Budsberg, 80, Milwaukee, died on Friday at West Allis Memorial Hospital. A former resident of the Iola area, she had been in failing health in recent months.

She was the former Myrtle Jacobson, born on Aug. 4. 1891, in the Town of Scandinavia, Waupaca County, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Jacobson. She was married to Mr. Budsberg on Dec. 27, 1911, and they lived in Milwaukee for many years. Mr. Budsberg. a retired machinist, died on June 27.

Mrs. Budsberg is survived by three sons, Vernon. Milwaukee, Delmar, Argyle, and Raymond. Iola; five daughters, Mrs. Norman (Bernice) Beilfuss, Mrs. Delbert (Genevieve) Bude and Mrs. Otto (Doris) Hambergcr, all of Milwaukee. Mrs. Richard (Dorothy) Honeck, Sussex. and Mrs. Jac (Margaret) Oelhafen, Cedarburg, and 18 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother and one sister. Funeral services will he held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at with the Rev. Henry A. Lease officiating. Burial will made in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home at Iola after 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Janet D. Budsberg

Janet D. Budsberg, 84, Iola, who grew up in the Rosholt area, died Saturday, June 23, 2007, at Bethany Nursing Home in Waupaca.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Iola. Interment will follow at the Scandinavia Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Voie Funeral Home in Iola from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and at the church from 10 a.m. Thursday until the service. Memorials may be sent to the family, Our Savior Lutheran Church or the Bethany Bus Fund.

Mrs. Budsberg was born Jan. 23, 1923, a daughter of the late James and Ellen Broten. She was raised in the Norske area and Rosholt.
She was married to Raymond Budsberg in 1942 at Alban Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Bryan (Darlene), Waupaca, and Bruce, Houston, Texas; one daughter, Lynn Daczyk, East Moline, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one foster brother, Arvid Hanson.

Raymond S. Budsberg


Raymond S. Budsberg, 89, of Iola, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2005, at Bethany Home in Waupaca.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola. Burial will be in the Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Voie Funeral Home in Iola. Voie Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Budsberg was born Feb. 1, 1916, in Scandinavia, son of the late Albert and Myrtle (Jacobson) Budsberg. On Oct. 10, 1942, he was married to Janet Broten at Alban Lutheran Church. She survives.

He had worked at the Veterans Home in King. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1937 to 1941.

Along with his wife, survivors include one daughter, Lynn Daczyk, East Moline, Ill.; two sons, Bryan (Darlene) Budsberg, Waupaca, and Bruce Budsberg, Houston; six grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and three sisters, Margaret (Dean) Weasel, West Bend, Dorothy Honeck, Milwaukee, and Bernice Beilfuss, Florence.

Mrs. Caroline Olson

Mrs. Caroline Olson, 81, a Scandinavia resident for more than 60 years and mother of Phil Olson, 409 Franklin street, owner and operator of the Olson Pure Ice company, died Thursday morning at the Iola hospital. Mrs. Olson had suffered poor health for the past year. She was hospitalized for three days last week and re-entered the hospital the afternoon before she died.

The former Caroline Christiansen was born May 8, 1872, near Oslo, Norway, and came to Scandinavia in 1892. On Nov. 20, 1894, she was married to Oluf G. Olson at Scandinavia, With the exception of a few years spent at Amherst, the couple resided all their married life on the present family farm near Scandinavia. Mr. Olson died Jan. 26, 1940. and since then his widow had resided in the village.

Surviving are four sons, Alvin and Norman, Scandinavia; Wilhelm, Amherst, and Phil; a daughter, Mrs. Ed Knutson, Ogdensburg; a foster daughter, Mrs. Aldo Danielson, Iola; 17 grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and four sisters, two of whom are in Norway, one in Canada and the other in Seattle, Wash.

Mrs. Olson was a member of the Scandinavia Lutheran church. Funeral services will be conducted at the church at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. Burial will follow in the Scandinavia cemetery. Friends may call at the Swenson funeral home at Iola until the time of services.

Mrs. Olson's Funeral

Rev. Elmer R. Larson officiated at funeral services Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Scandinavia Lutheran church for Mrs. Caroline Olson of Scandinavia.

Burial followed in the Scandinavia Lutheran cemetery- Mrs. Olson died last Thursday morning at the Iola hospital. The pallbearers were Alfred Anderson, Sr.. Anton Rasmussen, Ernest Lutz, Clay Quinn, Lorin Torgerson and Roy Nottleson.

During the services. Delmar Gurholt sang, "Saved by Grace" and "My Faith Looks Up to Thee." Miss Sandra Holtebeck was the accompanist. Attending the funeral from a distance were the following relatives and friends:

Mrs. Calla Isaacson


Mrs. Calla Isaacson, 90. a Town of Amherst resident for many years, died Thursday morning at 11:50 o'clock at her home there. Although she had been in ill health for several years, she was confined to bed for only the past two days.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Scandinavia Lutheran Church, of which she was a member. The Rev. L. R. Jurgensen will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery. The body is at the Voie Funeral Home in Iola where friends may call, from Sunday noon to Monday noon.

Mrs. Isaacson was born on Jan. 16, 1865 in Norway, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Engebretson. She came to this country at the age of three years and after living in Manitowoc for a time located in the Amherst township with her parents. She had lived there since.

Her marriage to Nels Isaacson took place on March 12. 1891. Mr. Isaacson died in 1925.

Surviving are three daughters. Mrs. Harris Amondson. Iola, and Mrs. Carl Rierson and Mrs., James Reierson, Town of Amherst; two sons, Norman and Selmer Isaacson. Town of Amherst; two grandsons and a sister. Mrs. Ida Isaacson, also of Amherst.

Selmer Isaacson

Selmer Isaacson, 71, Waupaca, died at 7:56 a.m. Thursday at Riverside Hospital in Waupaca of an apparent heart attack.

A lifelong resident of the Scandinavia area, Mr. Isaacson was born Sept. 27,1904, in the Town of Scandinavia in Waupaca County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Nels Isaacson. He was a laborer and on Dec. 15,1974, married the former Lalia Peterson, who survives.

Other survivors include two sons from a previous marriage, David, Amherst Junction and Robert, Streamwood, Ill.; a stepson, William Peterson, Manassas, Va.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. John (Connie) Westra, Westland, Mich.; a brother, Norman. Scandinavia; a sister, Mrs. James (Clara) Reierson, Scandinavia; four grandchildren and five step grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Isaacson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Iola, with Rev. Henry A. Lease officiating. Burial will be In the Scandinavia Cemetery. Friends may call at the Voie Funeral Home, Iola, after 6 p.m. Sunday.
