Scandinavia Lutheran Cemetery
Section 10, Scandinavia Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin
Located on County G north of Nottleson Road

Dedicated June 6, 1853

Some notes on the cemetery layout: (This list was prepared in the summer of 2003)

Section A is the oldest part of the cemetery. It lies to the left (south) of the old road through the center of the cemetery. It contains 48 rows of lots and monuments, counting from the front or highway side of the cemetery. On the Section –Row--Lot list, the names run from right to left (facing west) The lot numbers alternate left to right and right to left.

The lots were not laid out in advance, but were mapped and numbered a lot at a time. There was no uniformity of lot size or shape and may contain from 1 to a dozen or more grave sites. The map is only roughly to scale.

Section B is the next oldest part and lies to the right (north) of the old road through the center of the cemetery, and to the left of the north leg of the present road. It contains 50 rows of lots and monuments. On the Section-Row-Lot list the names run from right to left. These lot numbers also alternate left to right and right to left. These lots also were not laid out in advance, but were mapped and numbered a lot at a time as they were sold.

There is no uniformity of lot size and shape, and may contain from 1 to a dozen or more grave sites. The map is only roughly to scale. There is considerable overlapping of burial dates between sections A and B. There some relatively recent burials, especially in section B.

Section C lies to the right (north) of the north leg of the present road. It contains 34 rows of lots and monuments. This section was the first to be laid in its entirety in advance. The lots are rectangular and span two rows of graves and monuments so there are 17 rows of lots. These are six and eight grave lots and are designated as either E or W in the lot number column. Burials in this section range from the early 1920s to the present. In the section-row-lot list the names occur from right (north) to left (south).

Section D is a small strip at the west end of the cemetery, west of the middle leg of the present road. It has been used as a "Potters Grave" area. It contains three graves, marked only by damaged funeral home markers.

Section E is a tier of 4 grave lots lying along the north side of the south leg of the present road. It contains 42 lots numbered east to west.

Section F is a newer part that lies to the left (south) of the south leg of the present road. It is two 4-grave lots wide and has 44 rows. The names of the occupants run left (south) to right (north) on the section-row-lot list.

Section G is the old road through the center of the cemetery. A few lots were sold and then sales were discontinued because the monuments blocked access to sections A and B. The names on the section-row-lot list run from east to west.

Section H is south of Section F and is the most southerly section of the cemetery. It is three four-grave lots wide and contains 44 rows. The names run left (south) to right (North).

Maps of the cemetery have not been published but are not necessary for anyone wishing to locate a grave. The rows of graves in each section are not very long. Any researcher who gets the correct section and row will easily find the graves they are seeking except of course those burials whose graves are unmarked. Most of the unmarked graves are older and are in sections A and B. The left hand columns of both the Alphabetical list and the section-row-lot list contain the section –row and lot number.

The starting point in the preparation of these lists was the Section-Row list prepared by Wayne and Alta Guyant in the early 1970s. Next came a row by row viewing of the stones and the filling in of the more recent burials.

Many of the unmarked burials came from the Thor Helgeson’s notes. He did not specify any locations, so if there is no stone that person is listed as "location unknown-no marker" Many, about 60+ percent of his listings, had stones. The unknown location graves either never had a marker or a wooden marker, long since decayed . These are almost entirely in Sections A and B, the oldest parts of the cemetery.

Another source of information was a book of obituaries prepared and maintained for many years by Wayne and Alta Guyant, and now maintained by Geraldine Trinrud.

If you find any errors, omissions or have maiden names, please notify the Cemetery Sextant, Mr. Dane Johnson, N 5295 County Q, Scandinavia, WI. 54977 or his successor.

Thanks to the hard work of Kermit Peterson for the many hours of research that went into the listing of this cemetery and for his willing to share this by having it placed on the Waupaca County Website.
