Darlene Ryan An old pioneer, a neighbor, and a friend… Our friend, JOEL HOWARD was a descendant of a long line of distinguished English families and was born at Mottram, or Woodhead England, in 1824. He came to this country when a mere youth and lived until he arrived to manhood with his sister’s family, when he was induced to enter as a sailor, upon the Western Lakes, sailing summers, and working winters in a number of lumbering points in Northern Wisconsin. Some time in 1850 MR. HOWARD claimed a quarter section of land, being the present homestead, sometime before the Government survey…July 24th, 1853 MR. HOWARD married MISS HANAH WINCHELL, of More, and settled upon his claim with his family in February 1855…..On the first days of August last MR. HOWARD came to Oshkosh to try the virtues of the Turkish Baths for an old trouble, but after a few days trial, instead of relief, was compelled to take to his bed. The best of medical treatment and careful nursing proved unavailing and MR. HOWARD passed away peacefully on Monday, October 3d, 1892, at 2:30 p. m. making his age about 69, leaving a family, consisting of a wife, three daughters and a son. A brief funeral service was held at the residence of GEORGE HAWLEY, No. 388 Wisconsin Avenue, Oshkosh, on Tuesday, the 4th of 11 a. m. the Rev. WM. BENNETT of the 2d. M. E. Church officiating. His remains were taken by boat to Tustin and thence to Bloomfield to his residence, and Thursday following at 10 o’clock a. m. the funeral took place, the Rev. Mr. SPENCER of Pine River officiating….. The remains were laid in the family lot at Brushville beside a daughter who preceded him many years before. ________________________________ Submitted by Darlene RyanFrom the Guyant Collection-Newspaper unknown MARY E.
