:MARRIED 70 YEARS…Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Bishop, Hancock will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary with a large party Sunday.

Couple Wed 70 Years At Hancock

Seventy years is a long time.  But Harvey and Lettie Bishop, Hancock, don’t seem to mind.  They were married on June 14, 1905 in their home in Thorp and have been together ever since.

“It was a real small wedding,” remembers Mrs. Bishop.  “The minister just came out to our house.  We didn’t get a single wedding gift.  But it’s a good day.  June 14 is Flag day and they always put out the flags for us.”

The Bishops, who have seven children, 27 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren have lived in the Hancock area since 1920.  Mrs. Bishop’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Abel Parker, were the first settlers in the area, arriving about 1850.

Mr. Bishop, who is 94, still enjoys working in his large garden.  At the present time he is growing potatoes, corn, beets carrots, strawberries and a large variety of flowers.

Mrs. Bishop enjoys collecting antique and commemorative plates, cups and saucers.  At 89 she has plates depicting all the states except Rhode Island and Massachusetts.  “I got my first plate when I was 15.  We went down to play cabby for circle and we had to take a sack and we couldn’t look in it. I got a cup.”
