On the 1850 federal census for Berlin Township, in household # 1035 is
John Ryan, who is my Great Grandfather. At that time, the household consisted
of John, wife Johanna, and son Timothy. Details follow:

John: b. 1822 in Croom, County Limerick, Ireland; married Johanna on 10
April 1845 in Church of St. Mary of the Assumption in Croom, County Limerick.
died 13 Feb. 1875 on the family farm, Township of Marion [now Waushara County],
and buried in Victory Hill Cemetery [also known as the Old Irish Cemetery],
which is under the cognizance of St. Mark's Church, now located in Redgranite,
WI.

Johanna's maiden name is Sullivan, b. 1828 in Croom. Died 13 May 1895 and
buried in Victory Hill Cemetery.

Timothy was born 12 Feb. 1849 in Croom. John came over to the USA in 1848
on the Ship INTRINSIC out of Liverpool, ENG [probably left from the port of
Cobh, County Cork, which was the closest operating port at the time and which
had regular feeder ships to Liverpool where the larger transatlantic ships
were located] to find a place for them to settle and homestead during the
Irish Famine of 1845-1850 and somehow found Berlin [probably through someone
from Croom who had come over to the USA earlier]. Johanna was pregnant with
Tim and couldn't accompany, however in April of 1849, 6 weeks after Tim was
born, she and Tim boarded a ship in Ireland and sailed for New York, where
John met them in early June when they arrived, saw his firstborn son for the
first time, and accompanied them to their new home in Berlin.

Tim married Laura Ann Durkee 17 NOV 1875 at the Catholic Church in Montello,
WI. He died 4 June 1932 and both he and Laura are buried in St. James
Church Cemetery, Neshkoro, Marquette County, WI.

In addition to the John, Johanna, & Tim in the 1850 census, the following
additional children were born in Berlin Township: Ellen Ryan, b. 27 APR
1851, married Richard King in 1872, and died 11 Jan 1884 in childbirth and is
buried in Victory Hill Cemetery. Patrick Ryan, b. 17 July 1855, married Anna
Belle Gilchriest on 10 April 1882 [same day as his parents marriage in
Ireland in 1845], and died on 29 March 1922 and is buried in St. James
Cemetery, Neshkoro. Mary Alice Ryan was born 16 Dec. 1857, married my
Grandfather James Joseph Carey on 14 Aug. 1878 at St. Patrick's Catholic
Church in Ripon, is the mother of my Dad, Robert Emmett Carey; she died 4
April 1906, and is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Berlin, WI. Catherine Ryan
was born 14 Feb. 1859, married John Chadwick 29 March 1880 in Randolph, Green
Lake County, WI, died 20 June 1924 in Redgranite, and is buried in St. James
Cemetery in Neshkoro. The last two children born were twins: Andrew J. Ryan
& Johanna Ryan. Andrew was born 5 Aug. 1862, married Theresa Murphy 27 Feb.
1889 in St. Josephs Church in Berlin, and died 3 Feb. 1942 and is buried in
Oakwood Cemetery in Berlin. Johanna was also born 5 Aug. 1862, married John
Seidel at date & place unknown, and died at a date unknown and is buried in
St. James Cemetery in Neshkoro.
