In October 1839, a party of twenty German families from Pomerania, Prussia, settled the Freistadt community in the western part of the Town of Mequon. They were Old Lutherans who had resisted the tyranny of the Prussia king, Frederick William III's attempts to take control over the Protestant churches through the Prussian Union of Churches. In German, "Freistadt" means "Free City". These settlers purchased land in sections 17, 18, 19, and 20; range 21. Their setlement was centered on the intersection of these four sections (currently the south part of Granville Road where it meets Freistadt Road). In 1840, they built a log cabin church, which they named Trinity Lutheran Church. It was the first Lutheran church in Wisconsin. In 1845, what would become the Lutheran Synod of Buffalo was organized in Freistadt. However, the Freistadt church became a part of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod in 1848. The wooden church was replaced with a limestone building in 1884. The current church, built in 1884, is the fourth to be built by the congergation. Nothing remains of the first three structures. The first, a 20x30 foot log structure built in 1840. The second, dating from 1845, was a brick and timber fachwerk structure located in the southern cemetery, less that 1/4 mile south of the present church. The third church was a half timber church destroyed by the 1870 fire. Because of the history of the church, there are 3 Trinity Lutheran Church Cemeteries - Old Trinity Lutheran - Located next to the Church at 10729 W Freistadt Rd, Mequon, WI 53097 (North side) Buffalo Synod Trinity Lutheran - Located on the north side of Freistadt Road (across the street from the school) South Trinity Lutheran - Located south of Church on Granville Road - has both old and new burial graves There are many individuals who are buried here in unmarked graves and not recorded in the transcriptions. Some stones are very hard to read, therefore, some of the dates may be transcribed wrong. If you find correct burial information, please notify the OzaukeeCoWI County Coordinator so it can be properly updated. Thank you! Names and dates are written according to headstone. Some maiden names added when known. All three of the Trinity Lutheran Church Cememeteries were transcribed by Paulette Tremmel - July 31, 2004 - for USGenWeb WiGenWeb OzuakeeCoWI. |
