THE END

NOTE:  I so thoroughly enjoyed this booklet!  It really gives you a GREAT glimpse into what early 1900 rural Shawano County was like.  The early settlers with their homesteads scattered here and there on dusty, rut filled roads, the farmers and loggers headed to town to get supplies and gathering by the store-fronts to hear the latest news in town, the children running home from school to help with the farm chores, and the pioneer wives making these rural houses into homes for their families.  I was surprised to know the actual size of Mattoon then was 1500 people and of all the businesses in town!  I guess I had never really thought about the "advertising" that went into selling these semi-logged off parcels to the early settlers.  And I so loved the short testimonies of the already-settled pioneers (and some even gave the year they settled here).  And the Bank of Mattoon was paying 3% on 6 month CD's and 4% on 12 month CD's...interesting! (No pun intended!!)

And again, my heart-felt thanks to Mike Meyer & his cousin James Coughlin for sending this booklet out for me to copy and post!  There's usually a moral-to-the-story and I guess this one is: Don't be afraid to ASK because there might just be a Genie-angel on the other end who is more than willing to help out!!! A BIG GenWeb Project THANKS to you both!!!
