Again, Jill has done a
marvelous job at documenting this family and we have attached links
to the documents she has scanned in... AWESOME RESEARCH &
DOCUMENTATION. As you have read on the previous page, Marianna
Banasynski was born December 10, 1860 in Olesie, Poland -- the third
child born to Charles & Hattie Banasynski. She married Frank
Zacharias (also spelled Zacharyasz or Zaharris) on September 4, 1881
in Dobrzyca, Poland and this is their story...
Franciszek (Francis, Frank)
Zacharyasz/Zacharias was born 28 Mar 1856 in Strzyzew, Pleszew,
Poznan, Poland. (Strzyzew, Poland is now called Grunan,
Poland.) Marianna Banaszynski/Banach was born 10 Dec 1859 in Olesie, Pleszew, Poznan,
Poland. (It appears that Olesie, Poland no longer exists). On
04 Sep 1881 in Dobrzyca, Pleszew, Poznan,
Poland Frank Zacharyasz/Zacharias (age
25) married Marianna (Mary) Banaszynski/Banach (age 21). (Dobrzyca
in German is identified as Dobberschutz, Posen, Germany.) The
newlyweds who were living in Czerbo, Poland at the time packed up
what little
belongings that they had and traveled to America, settling in a
large Polish immigrant community in Berea, Cuyahoga, CO., OH. It
was there that both Zacharyasz and the Banaszynski families had
already settled before them. The couple traveled an indirect
route. They departed
Hamburg,
Germany to Hull England on 23
Sep 1881 on the ship, “Hamburg”. They arrived in
Baltimore, MD from Liverpool, England on
14 Oct 1881 on the ship, “Nova Scotian”. It was in
Berea, OH that their first three
children Peter, Maryann and Frank were born. It is also where Frank
found work hauling beer with a horse and wagon.
In 1884 a man named J.J. Hoff from
the J.J. Hoff Land Company located in Milwaukee, WI platted Pulaski Wisconsin
Territory. It was his goal to appeal to Polish immigrants living in
the Polish settlements of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Chicago, IL and
Milwaukee, WI that they could have a piece of the American Dream of
owning land for very little money. These people scraped what little
money they had and the first pioneer settlers came to Angelica
Township, Shawano CO., WI in 1884. The town’s name has now been
changed to Pulaski, Shawano CO., WI. The settlers came here
intending to become permanent inhabitants of this uncompromising
area of brushy lowland that had been logged off for its timber.
Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias wanted to be a part of this new
settlement and achieve that
American Dream. Land records show
Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias purchased 80 acres of farmland
at $7 per acre for $560.00 on the Old Route#1 in
Angelica
Twp, Shawano CO., WI on 30 Sep 1885. The home and many of its
buildings still stand today and is located at 306 Deer Rd. in
Pulaski, Shawano, CO., WI.
(click on
thumbnail pic on the left to see larger image. The last known
owner of the farm and land was Peter Wilinski. However he passed
away about a year ago and Jill does not know who owns the farm and
land today).
By the end of 1885 there were 35 settlers. Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias
along with their three children Peter, Maryann and Frank were
amongst them. At the time there were no roads to speak of except
for few logging roads among acres of cut over land, swampy and
covered with left over overgrowth of trees and brush. There were no
buildings and no railroads to get materials for building. The
nearest railways were 12 miles away in Sobieski, WI or 20 miles away in Green
Bay, WI. There was nothing else but
clouds as their roof above their heads. Being destitute of simple
conveniences, stumps were used for many purposes; such as tables and
chairs. Mr. Hoff held a Picnic in 1885, so that prospective
settlers and new settlers that just purchased land could meet and
become acquainted with settlers in adjoining settlements. The
gathering was quite successful, as neighbors got together and helped
and supported each other as much as they could. They set to the
back breaking task and long hours of clearing the land and building
provisional shacks. Life was good.
However, this happy life soon came to
an end for many that were living in the Shawano, County area. In
1886 extensive forest fires raged through Northern WI and Michigan
and decimated the landscape. The day looked like night. Smoke from
the fires could be seen from as far away as
Milwaukee, WI. Inhabitants of
nearly every forest town in the area had been affected by this
disaster. Several residents lost their lives. Many lost their
homes, their crops destroyed and livestock killed. Telegraph poles
and railroad ties burned and streams died up. People were in much
distress. On 26 Aug 1886 the Humane Society put out an appeal for
contributions for those suffering in the Shawano, County area. They
stated that donations would be distributed in the towns of Angelica
and Maple Grove, where the most of the devastation occurred.
Reports to the Human Society are that thirty families numbering 210
people were homeless and destitute. Not only were their homes
destroyed, but everything they owned was ruined in the fire. A call
for donations of items such as clothing, cooking utensils and
everything needful for living went out. People from all over
responded to their needs. In addition to the day to day
necessities, train carloads of lumber were shipped to the people,
which they used to build new dwellings.
It was after this calamity that
settlers became more determined than ever to form a lasting
community, having deep hope and an optimistic outlook inspiring them
to struggle outward. Families began the task of picking up the
pieces and rebuilt their lives upon their same plat of land. Frank
and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias were no different. Frank built a new
home for his wife and eventually #13 children in total. He also
built a very large barn and many out buildings on the property.
Once Frank and Mary were established,
they did what so many immigrants did. They called for other family
members from the “Old Country” to come to America which held so much
opportunity and promise. Mary’s brother John Banaszynski decided he
to would immigrate to America. He was living in Warnez at the time
where he departed on the ship Belgenland in Antwerp, Belgium and Bremen and arrived
in New York on 09 May 1885. John settled for a time in
Berea, Cuyahoga CO., OH. This is where he probably had other
Banszynski and Zacharyasz/Zacharias family members living.
Eventually John would move to Angelica Twp, Shawano CO., WI where
he married his first wife Constance Wujek on 02 Marc 1892. Constance
died 17 Apr 1894 and John soon remarried Mary Wasielewski on
12 Aug 1895. The couple purchased #2
large plats of land on Old Route #3 in Angelica Twp. It is now
named Town Hall Road, between Elm Road
and Green Valley Road. This home is located less than a mile from
his sister and her husband Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias’
homestead. Because of their close proximity, the families spent
much time together. For a few decades John Banaszynski was living
across the road from Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias’ daughter,
Maryanne Kwapiszewski’s father in-law Casimir Kwapiszewski’s
homestead. Eventually Casimir died and the land was parceled off to
Frank and Mary’s daughter and her husband, Vince and Hattie Kryger.
The Kryger’s built a General Store with an adjoining Cheese Factory
on this parcel of land in the 1930’s. John Bansazynski was a
farmer. He supplied the milk to make the cheese across the road at
the cheese factory. John and Mary Banaszynski continued to farm the
land and raise their children on their family homestead until their
deaths.
On Oct 1888 Mary’s parents Charles
(Karol) and Hattie (Jadwiga) Banaszynski and their children
Nicholas, Vincent, Louis, Albert, Stanley, Frank, Frank’s wife
Stella and Frank and Stella’s son Joseph boarded a ship from Bremen
and sailed to Liverpool, England and Queenstown Ireland. The family
boarded another ship, “The City of Chicago” and arrived in New York, NY on 12 Nov 1888. From there they continued their journey by land to their final
destination, Angelica, Twp, Shawano CO.,
Wisconsin. The family purchased 140
acres of land on Old Route #1, which is now located at 674 Deer
Drive. This homestead is located just three farms away from where
Frank and Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias were living with their family.
Charles and Hattie raised their children on the family farm until
the children were old enough to marry. That is when they went on to
live in homes of their own. Their children Nicholas, Maryanne,
Vincent, Louis, Albert and Stanley chose to move to Milwaukee, WI. As mention before, this is
where they had aunts, uncles and cousin Banaszynski and Zachryasz/Zacharias
already living. This is also where their brother Andrew was already
living. They also chose to relocate there because there were better
job opportunities. Charles and Hattie’s sons Frank, Vincent and John
Banaszynski chose to lived in Angelica all of their lives. One of
Charles and Hattie’s son’s children operated Joe’s Tavern located in
Pulaski, WI during the 1930’s. Vincent
Banszynski’s son Leo owned a cheese factory in Pulaski in the 1930’s
as well. Charles and Hattie Banaszynski continued to live with their
son Frank, his wife Stella and their children on the family
homestead until they died. Charles died on
09 Feb 1915 of the Senile
Debility he had for several years. Hattie died on 24 Oct 1923 of Diabetes. Both are buried at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin
Mary Cemetery located in
Pulaski, WI. Frank and Stella
Banaszynski continued to live on the family farm until their deaths
as well. Ownership of the family homestead eventually went to Frank
and Stella’s son, John and his wife Sophie Banaszynski. Eventually
their son Alvin took ownership. In 1977 the Banaszynski homestead
was sold to non-family members, Wilbert and Nancy Lewis. The farm
is very well tended and is used to raise cattle and grow organic
crops.
It is not known for certain if the
following is Mary’s brother, Andrew Banaszynski’s immigration
information. However we believe that this is. If it is correct,
Andrew would be the last of Mary Zacharyasz/Zacharias’ sibling’s to
come to America. The manifest states Andrew Banaszynski departed
Plock-Hamburg on the ship,
Marsala and arrived in New York
on 19 Feb 1892. He married Alvina Krajewski about 1894 and the
couple resided in Milwaukee, WI where they raised their
families until their deaths. Andrew and Alvina would also travel to
Angelica, WI to visit with their Banaszynski and Zacharyasz/Zahchaias
families.
Overtime two of Frank Zacharyasz/Zacharias’
siblings lived in Angelica Twp, Shawano CO., WI and surrounding
areas. Bother John Zacharyasz/Zaharris and his wife Mary bounced
back and forth between Angelica Twp, WI and Penn Twp, IA. They were
found living in Angelica Twp, WI in the years 1888, 1894 and 1903,
as these were the years their children were born. However the
family traveled back and forth between those locations for these
years just mentioned, so these would not be consecutives years.
Frank’s sister Marianna and her husband Stanley Stager were living
in Bayfield CO. WI on 03 Mar 1891 when their son Frank was born.
This is in a community close to Angelica Twp. By the time their son
John was born on 22 Nov 1893, the family was living in OH and this is where the couple lived until
their deaths.
Frank Zacharyasz/Zacharias was
general farmer and it was an expectation that all of this children
helped on the farm. Life on the farm was hard, but very rewarding.
Their homestead was a very exciting place to be. This home was the
place their children were born in. It was a place the family and
friends gathered when they celebrated many memorable events such as
a child’s baptism, or wedding’s. Many gatherings took place in the
family barn from celebrating the sacraments, to square dances.
Whoever could play an instrument, no matter the level of experience
was invited to perform. The family would dance and enjoy each others
company until the wee hours of the morning. Many relatives would
make the long trip from Milwaukee to visit their Zacharyasz Family
and share in a picnic. By all accounts a good time was had by all.
As Frank and Mary’s children grew
into adults, the children married and started having families of
their own. Some stayed in Angelica Twp/Pulaski. Others made the
journey to Milwaukee, WI where there were many more job
opportunities. This is also where their aunts, uncles and cousins
Zacharyasz/Zacharias and Banaszynski had been living for some time.
Others took their journey elsewhere. Frank and Mary’s children
Hedwig (Hattie), Agnes, Frank and Hieronym (Harry) all lived and
died in Pulaski WI. Children Rose, Pauline and
Frank lived in Pulaski for awhile. However after time they moved to
Detroit MI,
Waupun, WI and Mosinee, WI respectively. Children
Maryann, Peter, Anthony, Louise, John, Joseph and Frank chose to set
up new lives and relocate in Milwaukee where they raised their
families until their deaths.
Frank and Mary chose to stay in the
home that became their American Dream. It was a place that provided
so many memories for good and for bad, in a new land so many years
ago. Frank died on 18 Apr 1933 at 6:40 PM of Diabetes Mellitus.
Mary died on 01 Mar 1941 at 10.50 PM of an Intestinal Obstruction caused by Volvulus. She also suffered
from Arteriosclerosis. Both are buried at the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary Church Cemetery located in
Pulaski, WI.

Migration of the Zacharyasz/Zacharias/Zaharis
Families
This is an account of Frank (1856 - 1933) Zacharias' PARENTS
and Frank's 11 SIBLINGS.
Martin (Marcin) Zacharyasz/Zaharris (a farmer in Poland)
married Marianna Kowalski/Galewski on 28 Jan 1850 in Walkow,
Krotoszyn, Poznan, Poland. They are the parents of #12 children;
Jozef (Joseph), Marcin (Martin), Katarzyna (Katherine),
Franciszek (Francis, Frank), Lukasz (Lukas), John (Jan),
Magdalena, Tekla, Andrzej (Andrew), Maryanna, Piotr (Peter) and
Franciszka (Frances) Zacharyasz/Zaharris.
It appears that a number of unknown Banaszynski and Zacharyasz
Families emigrated from Poland and originally settled in a large
Polish settlement in Berea, Cuyahoga County, OH. This is near
Cleveland, OH. There are still a number of unknown Zacharyasz and
Banaszynski families that live in Berea today. It is believed these
families were the reason why the Wisconsin Banasynski and Zacharyasz
families chose to first settle in Berea, OH.
The first child of Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris to
immigrate to the US was their daughter Katarzyna, her husband Kasper
Kaczmarek and the couple’s three daughters. The family arrived in
New York on 15 Oct 1880. The couple settled in Berea, OH. By 1886
their daughter Katarzyna and her husband Kasper Kaczmarek moved to
Jefferson CO., IA to be near Katrazyna’s parents and sibling’s that
eventually immigrated to the US.
The second of their children to immigrate to the US was their newly
wed son, Frank Zacharyasz/Zacharias and his bride Marianna nee
Banaszynski. The couple arrived in Baltimore, MD on 14 Oct 1881
and settled in Berea, OH. The family purchased a home on 80 acres
of land on 30 Sep 1885. The homestead is located at 306 Deer Drive
(Old Route #1) in Angelica Twp/Pulaski, WI. The couple would go on
to have #13 children. They raised their family on this homestead
until their deaths. Some of their children continued to raise their
own families in this area. Others chose to move to Milwaukee,
Wisconsin where other Zacharyasz/Zacharias and Banaszynski relatives
resided. (Read more about this family in their own migration story.)
The third child of Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris to
immigrate to the US was John Zacharyasz/Zaharis. He arrived in the
US in 1881 and settled in Berea, OH. John moved around quite a
bit. He was found living in IA 1896. At some point in time, he
moved to Angelica Twp./Pulaski, WI, close to where his brother Frank
was residing. It was there that he married Mary Niedzielska on 02
Oct 1888. The family then moved to Penn Twp, IA by the time their
daughter Anastasia was born on 29 Jul 1889. The family was living
with John’s parents at the time. By the time John and Mary’s son
Joseph was born on 20 Jan 1894 the family moved back to in Angelica
Twp./Pulaski, WI. When their third child Edmond was born on 13 Feb
1896 the family was residing back in Penn Twp, IA. The couple would
continue to live in Penn Twp, IA and have two more children, Lucylle
born 25 Sep 1898 and Helen born 02 Dec 1900. When their sixth child
Lawrence was born on 03 Aug 1903 the family had moved back to
Angelica Twp./Pulaski, WI once again. By 1910 the family was found
living in Vancouver, WA where they lived until they were quite old.
Toward the end of their lives they lived with their children in
Portland, OR and then in Antioch, CA where they both died.
The fourth in this family that immigrated to the US was Martin and
Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris themselves. They were traveling with
their children Lukasz, Magdalene and Mary. The family was residing
in Dobrzyca, Poznan, Poland at the time. They departed on 15 Apr
1882 and arrived in Boston on 31 May 1882. The family settled in
Berea, OH. Their son Lukasz was sent to Iowa to find a farm for the
family to live. On 11 Jul 1882 his parents Martin and Marianna
Zacharyasz/Zaharris and children purchased land in Harvey’s Mill,
Penn Twp, Jefferson CO., IA. Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris
continued live in Penn Twp until their deaths. Martin died in 1893
when he fell from a Hickory Nut Tree on the family farm. Marianna
died on 21 Nov 1926.
Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris’ son Lukasz (Lukas) moved
with his parents to IA in 1882. He married Sophia Gluch on 16 Sep
1889 in Polishville, Jefferson CO., IA. The couple would go onto
having children and raising them in Penn Twp, Jefferson CO, IA.
This is also where Sophia died on 09 Mar 1931. Lukas died on 16 Nov
1956 in Fairfield, Jefferson CO., IA.
Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris’ daughter Magdalena moved
with her parents to IA in 1882. She married Joseph Bandura in
Polishville, Jefferson CO., IA on 01 Oct 1883. In 1889 the family
purchased property in Elba, Nebraska. Magdalena died on 31 Aug 1923
in Elba, Nabraska. Joseph remarried Mary Ann Kowaleski on 22 May
1924. The couple continued to live in Elba, Nebraska until their
deaths.
Martin and Marianna Zacharyasz/Zaharris’ daughter Marianna moved
with her parents to IA in 1882. On 21 Nov 1887 she married
Stanislaus (Stanley) Sztejka/Stager in Polishville, Jefferson CO.,
IA. Their first child Gertrude was born 27 Oct 1888 in Michigan.
When their second child Frank was born on 03 Mar 1891 the family
moved to Washburn, Bayfield CO., WI. The family moved to OH by the
time their third child John was born on 22 Nov 1893. When their
fourth child Helen was born on 03 Sep 1895 the family was living in
Berea, OH. This is where the couple would go on to have five more
children. Marianna Stager died in Berea on 16 Jan 1934 and her
husband Stanley died in Lakewood, OH on 20 Apr 1940.
