Vital Records are available from two different places. Same record, same fee...just two different places to write to.

First, the county courthouse has a set that are available for the public to use for genealogy research. I suggest a phone call first to find out what the specifics are and "best times" to do research.  They usually have a time limit of 2 hours and "pencils only" policy.

Shawano County Courthouse
Register of Deeds

Shawano, WI 54166
TELE: 715.524.2129
Some Shawano (city) vital records were never recorded at the courthouse, but were recorded at the Shawano City Hall.

City of Shawano
Clerk-Treasurer
127 S. Sawyer Street
Shawano, WI 54166
TELE: 715.526.6138

(Note: A complete index of the records contained at City Hall is also available at the Shawano Family History Center.)

Second, on site searching in the state vital records office in Madison is possible with advance appointments at particular hours and on particular days, for one hour time blocks. Contact the office for complete information on this procedure before traveling to Madison. Some records are not accessible. What makes this convenient is that if your ancestors relocated like mine did, this might very well be "one-stop-shopping" without having to tour half of the state of Wisconsin!

IF YOU KNOW THE DATE (within 2 years), they will mail you a copy of birth, death, marriage or divorce records.  Go to the following link, and there are forms you can download, print & mail.  The current fees are $20 for birth, death, marriage & divorce.

Third, LDS Family History Center has the Pre-1907 Birth, Marriage and Death records on microfilm.  Please visit the "Microfilmed Records" page for the film numbers.

And, the Wisconsin State Historical Society has just started a trial 6 month program for genealogical research service.  They will research the following Pre-1907 records and, for a fee of $20.00, send you a copy.  Check the website as they have a few indexes, etc. for years after 1907.

  • BIRTH CERTIFICATES:
  • MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES:
  • DIVORCE CERTIFICATES:
  • DEATH CERTIFICATES:
  • GENEALOGICAL REQUESTS:

Also, please don't forget the options of Volunteer Look-ups, Genie Angels or Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness.  If you have a specific name and date, these volunteers will do limited look-ups.  Also, when checking for county volunteers, be sure to check DANE county, too as that is where the state library is located.
