WAS
IN PUBLIC OFFICE HERE IN EARLY DAYS GEORGE BENNETT
SETTLER OF CARVER COUNTY, DIES AT CATAWBA, WIS, AT
ADVANCED AGE OF 87
CAME TO THIS COUNTY IN THE LATE FIFTIES AND WAS PROMINENT IN THE EARLY DAYS
OF CARVER COUNTY
George Bennett,
well remembered by many of our early residents, passed away at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. Carl Beyer of Catawba, Wis., Sunday Jan. 12, 1919. The cause of
his demise was heart disease.
George Bennett
was born at North Hampton, England, April 10th, 1831, and came to this county
in 1851 at the age of nineteen, living there for five or six years. In 1858
he drifted west and pulled up at the river town of Carver, Carver county where he became
prominent and where he resided until his removal to Worcestor
and was named postmaster, holding that position for 20 years. He was also
town clerk for 17 years and always took an active interest in public affairs.
It was while a resident of Carver county that he was married to Mary Colby Torrey in 1859. And to them eight children were born,
three of whom survive him. There are Mrs. Carl Beyer
of Catawba, Wis. with whom he made his home
the past five years; Mrs Alice Van Sky, Minneapolis and Mrs. Fred Broders,
Monroe, Wis.
His son William was killed in a snow slide at Sandon
B.C. on November 11, 1918, and this his family believe hastened his demise.
Until two weeks previous to his death he had been a well and strong for his
age and always enjoyed good health. He attained the ripe old age of 87 years,
9 months and two days. His wife passed away Nov. 30, 1901, and his son, Fred
Bennett died Jan 12, 1890, at Minneapolis.
The other three children died in infancy.
The senior editor
of The Herald was well acquainted with Mr. Bennett in our early boyhood days,
when he resided on a farm just outside the limits of the village of Carver.
He settled there with the late L.H. Griffin and
J.P. Torrey. He was elected County Auditor of
Carver County and served as such during the stirring days of the Civil war,
holding two terms, from January 1, 1861 to January 1, 1865, filling the
position all during the trying and troublesome times of the great conflict
for the preservation of the Union and the Indian uprising of 1862 and retired
from office at his own volition. His brother, John Bennett officiated as his
deputy. The editor has corresponded with him at intervals for many years and
deeply regrets to learn of his demise. He was a noble man in the highest and
truest sense of the word. Peace be to he ashes. His
remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife in the cemetery at Worcestor,
Wis., January 16th.
