State Censuses were taken by the state of Wisconsin from 1836, when it was a territory, until 1905. The 1836, 1838, 1842, 1846, 1847, 1855, 1875, 1885, 1895 and the surviving fragments of the 1865 censuses resemble the early federal censuses, listing only the head of a household by name and summarizing the number of others. The 1905 census was the only state census in Wisconsin to list all the members of a household by name. U.S. Federal Census for 1900, 1910 and 1920 content included the name of every person in a household and included the name and age of each person; relationship to the head of house; name of street and number of house; sex; color; birthplace; occupation; marital status; number of years in the U.S.; birthplace of father and mother; whether parents were of foreign birth; whether able to read or write, speak English, or attended school within the previous year; month of birth for individual; number of years married; number children born to mother and number of living children. U.S. Federal Census for 1930 included all of the above except number of children born to mother and number of living children. In addition to the above items this census included whether a veteran of U.S. military or naval force and what war or expedition. **You should be able to request WI State and Federal censuses on microfilm through any Family History Center, by interlibrary loan from your local library or access online through paid sites such as Ancestry.com or Genealogy.com |
