USGenWeb Project
My name is Judy Groh and I am your host. This site is part of the WIGenWeb project, which is part of the larger USGenWeb project. The purpose of this site is to provide free information useful in researching the genealogies and histories of families that have lived in Oneida County.. Included is information on sources, libraries and archives, and, whenever possible, online indexes and transcriptions of source material or scans of original documents. If you have an interest in contributing material to this site contact me by email. Enjoy your visit!

ONEIDA COUNTY was formed in 1885 from a part of Lincoln County which was formed in 1874 from part of Marathon County. In turn, Marathon County was formed in 1850 from Portage County, one of the original Territorial counties. Thus, someone living in Oneida County today is on ground that was Portage County until 1850, Marathon County from 1850 to 1874 and Lincoln County from 1874 to 1885.

In 1893 Oneida County underwent significant change when the northwest corner was joined with part of Ashland County to form Iron County and an even greater portion of the northern part of the county went to form Vilas County.

Present day Oneida County is bordered by Vilas County on the north and Price County on the west. The southern border of Oneida County joins Lincoln County on the western part and Langlade County on the eastern part. Forest County is on Oneida County's eastern border.

The USGenWeb Project began in the spring of 1996 with a group of genealogists in Kentucky with an interest in providing free genealogical data to the public The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties, where collected databases would be stored. In addition to collecting these databases, other resources were to be made available including information on genealogical societies, posted queries, maps, and other aids. At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web sites. The concept quickly spread from Kentucky to other states and within a few months, the USGenWeb Project was born.

WIGenWeb has a state-level site maintained by State Coordinator Tina Vickery and Assistant State Coordinator Marcia Ann Kuehl. Likewise, each county has a coordinator who is responsible for providing assistance and maintaining a website of information for that specific county. Some counties are available for adoption, and assistance is always needed in transcribing, locating, and preparing data for the WIGENWEB Archives. If you'd like to volunteer to assist in the WIGENWEB project, or you are a new volunteer, please contact the state coordinator.
